Ted Nolan Hired by Rochester Americans

July 1, 2009 - By

The announcement today that Ted Nolan has been named the new VP of Hockey Operations for the Rochester Americans is hopefully the start of many big announcements to come.

Today is the start of the free agency period and it’s a time that the Florida Panthers and Rochester Americans have said that they will be busy getting veteran players signed in Rochester.

Hockey fans in Western New York will remember Nolan from his days at the head coach of the Buffalo Sabres from 1995 to 1997.  He was named coach of the year for the 96/97 season.  That was also his last season with the Sabres after a highly publicized dispute between himself John Muckler and Dominik Hasek.

If we go back even further in time he did play for the Rochester Americans during the 1984-1985 season.  During that season he played in 65 games scoring 28 goals and 34 assists for 62 points.

Ted Nolan and Jody Gage (who is still employed by the Amerks) also have a history when they played together with the Adirondack Red Wings back in the early 80′s.

Most recently Nolan coached the New York Islanders from 2006-2008.  In his first season as head [...]Read More

Jody Gage Removed as Amerks General Manager

May 12, 2009 - By

Jody Gage is being removed as general manager of the Rochester Americans by ownership. Gage has spent about half of his life (24 out of 49) with the Amerks organization, 11 years as a player and 13 years in the front office.

Kevin Oklobzija reported in the Democrat and Chronicle about the change that is coming.

My guess, and it’s simply a guess, is that Curt Styres and Lewis Staats are trying to find a way to lower expenses.  It’s been widely assumed that Gage is paid a decent salary but really has limited control regarding player moves.  The roster is controlled by the Florida Panthers.  Gage often worked with Jack Birch and the Panthers last season but ultimately they had the final say.

Anyone who has been watching headlines around the world of hockey and sports in general knows that teams are cutting costs where they can.

From the article:

Gage, 49, admitted a change is in the works but said, “I don’t have a comment right now.”

The team is expected to address the situation on Wednesday. Amerks owner Curt Styres and president Lewis Staats could not be reached for comment.

Gage said he couldn’t provide insight [...]Read More

Jacques Martin and Curt Styres Press Conference

April 8, 2009 - By

It’s pretty exciting (for me at least) that the 500th post on this web site is also a post with what should be a lot of great news regarding the future of the Rochester Americans and Florida Panthers affiliation (not just a ‘yay 500 posts’).  Jacques Martin (General Manager of the Florida Panthers) and Curt Styres (Owner of the Rochester Americans) held a press conference this afternoon announcing a number of plans they have in place to make the Amerks a Calder Cup contender yet again.

Curt Styres wants to make sure that fans understand that they (Amerks and Panthers) are doing their best to make the team a contender again.  The Panthers not only want to develop their players to be ready for the NHL, but they also believe that those players can learn a lot more through success.

The business relationship between the Rochester Americans and Florida Panthers is strong.  It seems that the relationship is not only strong in terms of financials, but the way the two teams operate.  Jody Gage and Lewis Staats have been working with the Panthers for most of the second half of the season in putting together a plan to improve.

Shantz Stops 50 shots, Arrives 30 mins before face off

March 29, 2009 - By

David Shantz arrived at Broome County arena less than a half hour before face off, started the game, and stopped 50 of 52 shots prior to the Amerks losing in the shootout against the Binghamton Senators.

Shantz was called up from the Dayton Bombers to start the game because both Mike Brodeur and Tyler Plante aren’t in the best condition to be starting.  Plante’s shoulder is bother him, not sure what’s bothering Brodeur.  Brodeur did not make the trip and Plante can play, but would prefer not too.  Goalie coach Bob Janosz was dressed and ready to be activated as the backup goalie if Shantz did not start in time.

I’ll post a weekend recap tonight, but took a minute to get this posted.

Here’s the story of Shantzs’ arrival from Michael Sharp, reporter for Press & Bulletin in Binghamton:

The whirlwind began about noon Saturday, when David Shantz got word out in Dayton, Ohio, that the Rochester Americans were recalling him for that night’s game in Binghamton.

From there, Shantz booked a flight for Ithaca, landed around 5:30 p.m., then was picked up by Amerks GM Jody Gage. As the two then raced to make the game [...]Read More

Audio from Jack Birch and Jody Gage Press Conference

November 24, 2008 - By

I’ve finally had the chance to encode the full audio from the press conference that Jack Birch and Jody Gage held last Thursday at Blue Cross Arena regarding the troubles the Amerks’ have had on the ice this season.

Rather than write an article about what was said, we’ve uploaded the audio from both of them for you to listen to.  Things have been moving fast for us this season, in the future we’ll have things like this up much sooner.  Take a listen and share your thoughts!

In a nutshell, what you see is what you get.

To the players who read our site, you may not want to listen!

This is What $2 Million in Scouting Gets You

November 20, 2008 - By

So, the Rochester Americans lost to the Toronto Marlies tonight at Blue Cross Arena by the final score of 5-2 in front of one of the smallest crowds that anyone could remember.

After the teams were done warming up I was able to count just over 200 people in seats around the arena.  On my way to spend money on concessions I asked a few ushers as well as some old timers if they had ever seen the arena like this, everyone either shook their head in disbelief and a couple said, “at least not in the new building.”

I feel sorry for all of the players, and while a few of them have made bad mistakes, I’m not going to blame them for this season.  During the post game show, Stefan Meyer made a comment about the coaching staff being terrific and if they all continue to work hard like they have been eventually something has to happen.

The players had been giving a solid effort, trying really hard, doing their best, until last night.  Against the Marlies they just could not seem to get it all together.  The Marlies are a team that isn’t doing too [...]Read More

Looking back at the first 20% of the Season

November 17, 2008 - By

The Amerks loss to the Hamilton Bulldogs on Sunday evening ended the first 20% of the season.  The team has won two games, at this pace they’ll win eight more through the rest of the season.

So, anyone have anything positive to look back on?

While the Amerks have only won two games and are in the basement, some other teams are in similar positions.  The Albany River Rats, Manchester Monarchs have each won three games, and the San Antonio Rampage have only won two as well.

Unless you haven’t been following the team, they’re basically last in every stats category.  If you want more stats, check out theahl.com and amerks.com, talking about them in detail is pointless.

The one thing that has been positive is that the players on the team are working hard.  Even though the team is in the basement statistically, they haven’t quit the season (yet).

They have lost confidence at times during some games, but they’ve continued to put forth an effort.

They’re a young team put into a bad situation.  During the 07/08 season the Amerks team was one that seemed to stop caring completely and rarely put in a solid effort.

Typically in [...]Read More

Amerks Monday Practice; Short Chat with Curt Styres

October 20, 2008 - By

The Amerks returned to practice this morning after a trip to Winnepeg over the weekend where they lost two games against the Manitoba Moose.

Tanner Glass and Jason Garrison have been the two best players this season, it’s noticeable in practice as well.  Any time you see a great play it’s one of them.

Amerks Owner Curt Styres was watching practice as well and I spoke with him for a few minutes regarding the team.  One of the things he asked was what I thought it would take to fill Blue Cross Arena.  My reply was simple, a winning team that is also tough.

Styres seems to like players that aren’t necessarily on the ice just to drop the gloves, but can play and hit and will also give others a sense of security.  He wants players to be able to take that extra stride into the corner where the opposing player following may think twice about what they do knowing who is on the bench watching.

One thing that Styres suggested to Gage was to have the team practice without shooting the puck.  You do have to wonder what good it really does when shots are always [...]Read More
