Amerks' Practice 10-28-2008

October 28, 2008 - By

I was hoping to see a really tough practice today after Saturday and Sunday’s games (and even Friday’s, it wasn’t a beautiful win).  And that is exactly what I am seeing.  Coach Benoit is not messing around today…not that he ever messes around.

During the first drill we are here for there are people still not hitting in the corners.  Benoit did not like that.  He called the whole team over to talk about how poorly he felt about that.  It sounded a little something like this. “We are so f***ing soft, so f***ing soft.  I don’t want to see you skating up and just putting your stick in there!  You hit your man and take the puck and get it out of there.”

They are now beating the bejesus out of each other in the corners.  And that is what I like to see.  Hit, hit, hit.  More hitting.  I want this team to start killing the other teams…literally.  I am sick of watching the other teams dig in the corner like professionals and we go in like pansies.  We will never win a corner battle that way.

There is an awful lot of bad words coming [...]Read More

Amerks Injury Update; Update on Fitzpatrick

October 19, 2008 - By

Rory Fitzpatrick was hit hard into the boards by Moose rookie winger Brandon Sawada on Saturday night, he may have suffered a concussion.  He’ll be examined by team doctors this week to determine his status.

If he is unable to play, the good news is that rookie Keaton Ellerby may finally be able to play.  He’s participated in all non contact drills at practices, so once he can grip his stick 100% he’s ready to play.

Other injuries:

Jordan Henry – knee, appears day to day

Stefan Meyer – groin, has not skated since opening night

10/12: Amerks Lose to Binghamton 3-1

October 13, 2008 - By

The Rochester Americans lost to the Binghamton Senators on Sunday night, final score was 3-1.  The Amerks opened the season with three games in three nights and lost all three.  They go on the road to play the Manitoba Moose next weekend, October 17 and 18th.

The Amerks lone goal was scored when Tanner Glass tipped in a shot from the point by Peter Aston at 15:01 of the third period.

The much anticipated Shawn Matthias was again not very visible.  Expectations are high on him so the less he produces the more fans are going to wonder.  One factor in tonights game could have been that we were often on the penalty kill or power play, a role he may not be intended for.

Chris Beckford-Tseu gets another loss in his column, but he played well.  The first two Binghamton goals were scored after some superb passing on a power play, and the third by bad defensive coverage.  He needs to be given time before anyone gets ready to throw in the towel on him.  More than anything our young defense needs some work to be able to help him out.

It was another game (and familiar [...]Read More

Amerks Opening Night Festivities

October 10, 2008 - By

The start of the 2008/09 Rochester Americans season is finally upon us!!  The organization has new ownership, a new sole affiliation, new players, new fans, new web site.. let’s play some hockey.  Here’s some additional notes for opening night, along with events at the arena.

When asked about Fridays opener after practice on Thursday morning, head coach Benoit Groulx commented, “Yes, I’m very excited.  We have a good group.  The kids are working really hard.  We’ll see tomorrow if it’s paying off.”

Keaton Ellerby has an “upper body injury,” but whatever that injury may be, it doesn’t impact his skating one bit.  After practice on Thursday morning he was doing sprints for about 15-20 minutes with Cipolla.  On the way off the ice Keaton jokingly commented to a 4yr old watching, “don’t play hockey, never play hockey.”  We still think Cipolla could suit up for the team if needed.  He replied, “yea, behind the bench.”

As of Thursday afternoon Shawn Matthias was on his way to Rochester to join the team.  Matthias made headlines last season when the Panthers called him up from juniors and he had an immediate impact on the team.  He should be exciting to [...]Read More
