Amerks to Have Solid Goaltending, Drew MacIntyre Signs

Amerks to Have Solid Goaltending, Drew MacIntyre Signs

We’re a five days into free agency and it appears as if the Buffalo Sabres have made their first signing that will have a direct impact on the Rochester Americans roster.  Word has just come out via Scott Radley of the Hamilton Spectator @radleyatthespec that the Buffalo Sabres have signed goalie Drew MacIntyre.

Amerks fans will know MacIntyre from seeing him play for the Hamilton Bulldogs, Chicago Wolves, Manitoba Moose and Grand Rapids Griffins.  In his professional career he has always had winning seasons and has been one of those goalies you knew would be a challenge playing against.

The Amerks will now be set with two solid goaltenders in the lineup with Drew MacIntyre and David Leggio.  With this news it also appears as if the Sabres will be keeping Enroth in the NHL to backup Ryan Miller.

Last season in 20 games with the Wolves MacIntyre went 12-5-1 with a 2.91 GAA and 0.906 save percentage. After being traded from the Thrashers to Canadians he played in 21 games with the Hamilton Bulldogs and went 12-6-2 with a 1.89 GAA and 0.938 save percentage.

Now that the goaltending situation is locked up it’s time to add some scoring to [...]Read More

Amerks Clinch Home Ice, Game 1 is on Thursday

April 10, 2010 - By

After 60 minutes of play on Friday night the score was tied 3-3 but the Amerks earned the one point that they needed to clinch home ice advantage for the first round of the playoffs.  In the coming days I’ll post my recap of the season, but one things for certain – it’s pretty impressive that the team went from one of the worst teams one season and in 2nd place in the division the next.

Rochester will host game 1 of the first round of the playoffs on Thursday April 15th and game 2 will be on Saturday April 17th.  If you’re a season ticket holder and put down a deposit for next season make sure to visit the offices to pickup your tickets.  If you’re not, call the Amerks offices on Monday morning to purchase playoff tickets.

Tell your friends, your neighbors, your family, your co-workers and even a random person on the street that the season is not over yet!

It’s been a few years since the Amerks made the playoffs so if you don’t remember that far back the sad reality is that attendance may not be the best.  That’s something seen all around The AHL [...]Read More

Cory Schneider Leads Moose to Win over Amerks

February 20, 2010 - By

The last time the Rochester Americans won a home game on a Friday night was November 27th, with the loss to the Manitoba Moose on Friday they have since lost eight straight Friday night home games.  That game they won in November was the game that they were up 4-0 and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins scored three in the third to make it a close game.

The difference maker in the game was Moose goaltender Cory Schneider who made 32 saves and only allowed three goals.  After the game Schneider said, “I knew they were going to come hard, my whole goal tonight was to come in here and steal a game and give my team a chance to win.”

Jeff Taffe talked about Schneider and goal tending saying, “He’s a great goaltender, as well as we played you’ve got to give him a lot of credit.  Good goaltenders win games like that.  We were the benefactor I think early in the year.  Our goalies were stealing games every night and just kind of hit a little rut right now.”

“He’s a confidence builder for everybody, he loves that too.  He loves when the game gets tight [...]Read More

Amerks Talk About Frustration after Tuesdays Loss

February 17, 2010 - By

The quest for 2,000 franchise wins will have to wait for another night for the Rochester Americans as they added another loss to the standings on Tuesday night against the Manitoba Moose.

The Amerks had a 2-1 lead off of goals from Jeff Taffe and Shawn Matthias just over half way through the second period and then in an instant things took a turn for the worst.  In a span of three minutes and four seconds the Moose scored three goals and had a 4-2 lead and never looked back.

Mike Duco did score a power play goal late in the third period and just prior to that the puck had gone in and out of the net but the ref never saw it.  None of that would’ve made a difference, the game was over.  Everyone became frustrated and it appeared as if everyone quit playing.

A season that started with a record of 18-3 at one point has turned into a season of wondering if the Amerks will even be able to stay ahead in the standings to make the playoffs.  The turmoil on the ice has also spread into the stands.  If you were [...]Read More

Two Goals for Rome Leads Moose to 2-1 Win Over Amerks

December 3, 2009 - By

Photo by Travis Golby at MooseHockey.com

The Rochester Americans wrapped up their fourth game of a season long six game road trip by losing to the Manitoba Moose by the final score of 2-1.  With the loss the Amerks dropped to 18-4-1-0 for the season and 2-2-0-0 on the road trip.  That’s right, only their 4th loss out of 23 games.  This was the first time the Amerks have lost when they’ve scored the first goal of the game.

It only took Graham Mink a total of 26 seconds to score the only goal for the Amerks.  Mink took the puck towards the net and was able to just barely get his stick on the puck and slid it through the legs of Cory Schneider.

This was Ryan Mior’s first regular season professional game and he played well, he certainly kept the Amerks in the game.  Mior made 22 saves in the game, including a penalty shot by Dan Sexton.  Sexton went with a back hand shot but Mior was able to get a small piece of the puck and deflected it high over the net.

Mior and Amerks coach Benoit Groulx know each other [...]Read More

Amerks Win 4-1 on the Road in Manitoba

December 1, 2009 - By

“We are happy the third period worked pretty well for us today,” is what Alexander Salak said on the Moose post game show.  That was the key to the Amerks 18th win of the season on Tuesday against the Manitoba Moose.  The final score was 4-1 with goals scored by Repik, Mink, Garrison, and Dadonov.

It’s interesting to note that last season at this point the Amerks were 3-18-1, now they are 18-3-1.  Very impressive turnaround.

I often find it interesting to find a defining moment in a game and tonight I think there was two of those.  The first was the Amerks doing a great job killing off a four minute high sticking call to Brady Calla.  The second was the Evgeny Dadonov goal at 14:53 of the third period to give the Amerks the 4-1 lead.  A strong third period and a three goal lead is what the Amerks need to make sure to do every game to be able to hold on to win.

Alexander Salak was outstanding in goal again but will be leaving the team in the morning.

In the post game radio show Benoit Groulx talked about what they needed [...]Read More

A Few Stats Six Games into the Season

October 18, 2009 - By

Is it a little early to start breaking down some stats?  Not at all.  The Amerks have a record of 4-1-1 and are one point out of first place in the division and two points out of first place IN THE LEAGUE.  They’re off to a fast start and are only getting better as they play.  The comeback win on Saturday against the Marlies shows a lot about this team, they can handle being down.

After the previous few seasons we need to enjoy this as much as we can, we deserve it!

Let’s take a look at some stats six games into the season:

** Four wins only six games into the season.  Last season season it took them 24 games to reach four wins.

** Nine points in six games.  During the 2008/2009 season it took the Amerks 24 games to reach the same level.

** The Amerks are ONE POINT out of first place in the division.  The Manitoba Moose have two games up on the Amerks.

** They are only two points out of first place in the conference and overall in the league.  The San Antonio Rampage have one game up [...]Read More

Amerks Jersey Ranked 2nd by The Hockey News

August 13, 2009 - By

The Hockey News ranked jerseys last year based on the teams logo, this year they decided to go by patches, striping, and piping to rank the jerseys.  I also need to mention colors as well.

The Amerks were ranked second for a “Classic crest with a clean look to it.”  I’m not quite sure how the Milwaukee Admirals got the top spot.  In a typically boring month for hockey news this is what we get.

Take the time to visit The Hockey News web site to vote for the Rochester Americans jersey as the best in the AHL – http://thehockeynews.com/pages/puck_poll.php

Two teams missing are the Texas Stars and Abbotsford Heat because the teams have not officially launched their jerseys.  To view what was actually said about each jersey click here – http://www.thehockeynews.com/articles/27493-.html.

Here’s the straight rankings:

1. Milwaukee Admirals
2. Rochester Americans
3. San Antonio Rampage
4. Springfield Falcons
5. Manchester Monarchs
6. Worcester Sharks
7. Norfolk Admirals
8. Bridgeport Sound Tigers
9. Peoria Rivermen
10. Chicago Wolves
11. Manitoba Moose
12. Houston Aeros
13. Hershey Bears
14. Toronto Marlies
15. Grand Rapids Griffins[...]Read More

Amerks Summer News Stories, Getting Caught Up

August 12, 2009 - By

It has been a busy summer for the Rochester Americans with a lot of great news and a couple of stories that have generated some bad press.  Looking at the bigger picture it has been a positive summer.  Here’s the start of “round up” type posts I’ll be doing once the season gets started.  There’s always a lot of news but not always enough to make an individual post for.  They’re also a great way for people to get caught up that may not read this site or the news all that often.

Here’s what has happened so far this summer:

** Training camp for the Amerks has not even been announced yet but the doesn’t mean some Amerks aren’t back on the ice already.  The Rochester Americans Summer Hockey Camps are underway at ESL being led by Amerks assistant coach Jason Cipolla.  It’s great to see so many kids sporting the Amerks logo playing hockey, a sign that the season is close.

** Matt Duffy is still an unsigned draft pick of the Florida Panthers.  He was drafted in the fourth round and #104 overall in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.  When his season ended with the University of [...]Read More

American Hockey League Teams on Twitter

July 9, 2009 - By

As the 2009/2010 season approaches it appears as if the American Hockey League is finally represented within the Twitter universe.

Twitter is a great service for sports fans due to the fact that news can usually be summed up in less than 140 characters leaving out all of the extra fluff that accompanies articles.

If you’re new to Twitter I’m going to list some ways to effectively use the site and follow teams, if you’re just looking for the list of teams scroll down.

By following LetsGoAmerks (and other teams) on Twitter you’ll be able to get live updates about the Rochester Americans with scores, injuries, transactions (call ups and players being signed), game day lineups, media appearances, and much more.  If you scan through the updates I’ve posted I think you’ll notice it’s a all great info.  Also taking a moment to brag, LetsGoAmerks offers the best coverage of any AHL team on Twitter.

The old fashioned way of bookmarking web sites is still the easiest for a lot of people.  Simply save your favorite teams page as a bookmark and refresh it whenever you want to check for updates, no need to sign up for an account!

Amerks Announce 09/10 Opponents

July 7, 2009 - By

The Rochester Americans along with other teams in the American Hockey League today announced the schedule format and division alignments for the 2009/2010 season.  The biggest change is that the Syracuse Crunch are headed for the East Division in the Eastern Conference and the Amerks stay in the North Division of the Western Conference.  Another big change in the Amerks schedule is that they will not be playing any teams from the Western Division.

The Amerks only play 13 of the 29 teams in the league this season.  They will play against Abbotsford Heat, Grand Rapids Griffins, Hamilton Bulldogs, Lake Erie Monsters, Manitoba Moose, Toronto Marlies, Portland Pirates, Adirondack Phantoms, Albany River Rats, Binghamton Senators, Hershey Bears, Syracuse Crunch, and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

The first home game for the Amerks will be Saturday October 3rd at Blue Cross Arena, the season will start the night before on October 2nd on the road (opponent not yet named).

The Amerks will play the Portland Pirates a total of four games, two of those games will be at HSBC Arena in Buffalo.  The Pirates roster is pretty much changed over from when the Amerks and Sabres were affiliated so the game won’t be [...]Read More
