Amerks Lose 7-3 vs Marlies in Preseason Game

Amerks Lose 7-3 vs Marlies in Preseason Game

The Amerks played their first of two preseason games against the Toronto Marlies on Friday night and lost by the final score of 7-3.  Not much is known about the game other than Michal Repik, Triston Grant and Ryan Del Monte scored goals for the Amerks.  Tyler Plante played the first approximately 30 minutes and only allowed one goal.  Marc Cheverie replaced Plante midway through the second period and the other six goals were scored against.

The only thing I’d take away from the loss is that Cheverie has some work to do.  The same can probably be said about Brian Foster who I am assuming will see some action on Saturday.  Right now those two are battling to be the first call up when either Markstrom or Plante get injured or called up at some point this season, something that’s guaranteed to happen (an injury or callup that is).

The same two teams play again Saturday evening at Gaylord Powless Arena in Ohsweken, Ontario.  It’s considered a home game for the Amerks so we’ll probably get some better updates as the Amerks staff will be working the game.

Here’s the recap from the Amerks about the game:

Free Agency Impact on the Amerks, This Year, Last Year, Current Players

July 1, 2010 - By

The 2010 edition of free agency is set to begin at Noon EST today and we may not see immediate moves by the Florida Panthers and Rochester Americans but there definitely will be.  A lot of people still consider the Panthers a “bad parent club” but they did a very good job partnered with the Amerks in building a successful AHL team last season.  A few minor upgrades (defense and coach) and the team is already better.

One move that seems to have been overlooked is that the Panthers acquired Michael Grabner in a trade with the Vancouver Canucks.  The Panthers sent Keith Ballard and Victor Oreskovich to the Canucks in exchange.  Grabner has spent the majority of the past four seasons (180 games) with the Manitoba Moose and is good for 20 goals and 20 assists.  He’s not a veteran player based on games, but he’s a fast skater and team him up with a speedy center and we’ll have a reliable scoring line.

Jamie Johnson has already said that he’s been in contact with the Panthers and would be willing to come back.  Johnson was a leader on the ice and led the team in scoring.  He [...]Read More

Panthers Sign Cheverie to Add to Stockpile of Goalies

Goalie Prospects at the Panthers 2009 Development Camp

The Florida Panthers are set with at least one position, goalies.  On Thursday the Florida Panthers signed Marc Cheverie to a two year entry level contract.  Cheverie just finished his junior year with the University of Denver Pioneers where he led the nation with 24 wins, six shutouts and a .937 save percentage.  The season ended for the Pionees with a loss to RIT in the NCAA regional semifinals.

“It’s great to have this done,” said general manager Randy Sexton. “He’s a good young goaltending prospect. He made himself a player. He went to Denver as a backup and became one of the top goalies in the NCAA.” (quote from On Frozen Pond)

I’m sure the Panthers worked to get him signed so they could get two years out of him on an entry level contract to see what he’s capable of at the pro level.  He will be at the Panthers training camp in September and possibly spend some time with the Amerks.

The signing of Cheverie does raise some questions about what the Panthers are going to do with all of these goalies.  The Panthers also have [...]Read More

Prospect Marc Cheverie Nominated for Hobey Baker to face RIT

March 22, 2010 - By

Marc Cheverie (center) with Tyler Plante (right)

Florida Panthers goalie prospect Marc Cheverie has been nominated for the 2010 Hobey Baker Award which is awarded every year to college hockey’s top player.  Cheverie is a junior with the #1 ranked Denver Pioneers who will face the RIT Tigers in their quest to be the best in NCAA Division 1 hockey.

With Jacob Markstrom expecting to play in Rochester next season we could see Cheverie in an Amerks sweater in the 2011/2012 season (assuming for now the two teams stay affiliated).  Not a bad outlook on the goaltending front for the future.

Here’s some more stats on Cheverie:

Cheverie, 23, was named the WCHA Player of the Year and ranks as the national leader in wins (24), save percentage (.937) and shutouts (6). The Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia native posted a 24-4-3 overall mark while playing for the University of Denver, helping his team earn the No. 1 ranking in the Division I standings. Cheverie was drafted by Florida in the seventh round (193rd overall) in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.

When I saw him play at the Panthers Development camp last summer he looked great at the [...]Read More

Alexander Salak Dreams of the NHL

June 6, 2009 - By

The recent season that ended for goaltender Alexander Salak of TPS Turku was similar to that of Mike Brodeurs with the Rochester Americans, great goalies playing for bad teams.  The Florida Panthers recently signed Salak to a 2yr contract, a goaltender that is called the next Dominik Hasek by many people that have seen him play.

The story of the 2008/2009 season for Salak is one that many Rochester Americans fans can relate to, a bad team that was carried out of last place by excellent goaltending.  TPS Turku built the success they had during the season on the shoulders of Salak, much like the Amerks did when Brodeur arrived.  Both teams still finished near the basement in the standings, but both teams also became teams that opponents knew they could not take lightly.

Salak and Brodeur both carried their teams out of the basement, and both have a dream of playing in the NHL.

I asked Salak what made him sign with the Florida Panthers he said, “It is a dream for everyone, but the dream is not to sign but to play for an NHL team.”

Salak is connected to some well known NHL goaltenders through his goalie [...]Read More
