One Fan at a Time – News 10 Story

September 25, 2009 - By

The summer of 2009 will be known as the summer that Ted Nolan saved the Rochester Americans from becoming the next Phoenix Coyotes.  Ok, maybe that’s going a little too far but I think that Ted Nolan has created an excellent buzz about this years team.  I’ll go out on a limb and say that a lot of people that loosely follow the Amerks could name Ted Nolan as working for the Amerks easier than any of the players signed during the off season.

The team has addressed the on ice product by building a team that should win some games.  Now the work has to start on winning back the fans that walked away from the team for a number of reasons, including what Ed Auer talks about below.

Ted Nolan is doing his part to win fans back one at a time.

Here’s part of a story that News 10 aired:

Some long time season ticket holders have not renewed their tickets so the Amerks are calling one fan at a time.

“I was just disgusted with the way things were going.” Ed Auer has been a faithful Amerks fan for 25 years but this year he [...]Read More

Keaton Ellerby Ready to Join the Panthers

August 22, 2009 - By

The Florida Panthers saw the departure of Jay Bouwmeester this summer and in the wake of that they’re in need of help on defense, Keaton Ellerby is well aware that an opportunity awaits him in September.

I had the chance to talk to Ellerby this weekend and he stated, “They’ve told me that I have a good shot this year, just go in and have a good training camp and good preseason.”

Keaton Ellerby was drafted in the first round (10th overall) by the Florida Panthers in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, something he shares in common with Bouwmeester – being a first round pick.  Bouwmeester was drafted in the first round (3rd overall) in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.

After he was drafted Ellerby had the chance to tryout but was cut from Team Canada at the 2008 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships.  That wasn’t something that had a negative impact.  I asked Ellerby if he ever thought from then until now he’d be considered a potential to make the Panthers roster he said,  “When i got drafted i knew i had the chance of making it somewhere down the line.  It was exciting, a good opportunity [...]Read More

Amerks Summer News Stories, Getting Caught Up

August 12, 2009 - By

It has been a busy summer for the Rochester Americans with a lot of great news and a couple of stories that have generated some bad press.  Looking at the bigger picture it has been a positive summer.  Here’s the start of “round up” type posts I’ll be doing once the season gets started.  There’s always a lot of news but not always enough to make an individual post for.  They’re also a great way for people to get caught up that may not read this site or the news all that often.

Here’s what has happened so far this summer:

** Training camp for the Amerks has not even been announced yet but the doesn’t mean some Amerks aren’t back on the ice already.  The Rochester Americans Summer Hockey Camps are underway at ESL being led by Amerks assistant coach Jason Cipolla.  It’s great to see so many kids sporting the Amerks logo playing hockey, a sign that the season is close.

** Matt Duffy is still an unsigned draft pick of the Florida Panthers.  He was drafted in the fourth round and #104 overall in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.  When his season ended with the University of [...]Read More

Stefan Meyer Traded

June 20, 2009 - By

Stefan Meyer was traded on Thursday by the Florida Panthers to the Phoenix Coyotes in exchange for Steve Reinprecht.  Meyer had been drafted by the Panthers in the 2nd round (55th overall) in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.

Reinprecht and Meyer were both free agents this summer and neither were expected to sign again with their respective teams.  It appears to be a winning situation for both teams.  Rather than losing players for nothing to free agency both teams received someone in return.  The Panthers get a respectable center and the Coyotes get a potential prospect that still has a chance at the show.

Stefan Meyer only appeared in four games for the Panthers during his tenure with the NHL team, all four games were during the 2007-2008 season.  Meyer has spent the previous four seasons playing for the Rochester Americans in the American Hockey League.  With the Amerks he played in 266 games, scored 64 goals, 66 assists, and 363 penalty minutes.

Meyer was named the Amerks Rookie of the Year after the 2005-2006 season when he played in 68 games and tallied 28 points (12 goals, 16 assists).  His best season was the 2007-2008 season when Meyer played [...]Read More
