Amerks Spoil the Griffins Streak, Salak Wins his Tenth

November 15, 2009 - By

The Amerks played spoilers on Saturday night by defeating the Grand Rapids Griffins and ending the Griffins nine game winning streak and also handed the Griffins their first home loss of the season.

Alexander Salak won his 10th game of the season by saving 33 of the 34 shots he faced.  Is it too early to vote a most valuable player of the season?  Salak had a rough game on Thursday but was back to being himself with a number of impressive saves.

I’m sure that the defense thanks Salak after every win since he he keeps the heat off of them for mistakes made that allow for such quality shots to be taken on net.

Logan Pyett ruined Salaks bid for a shutout with a power play goal with 42 seconds left on the clock, assisted by Jeremy Williams and Doug Janik.

The Griffins had just killed off a two minute penalty late when Jason Garrison was called for cross checking.

At the end of the 08/09 season Matt Duffy had been a key player on the blue line but was not very impressive in the preseason.  In [...]Read More

Tough Loss On the Road, Portland Wins 6-3

November 13, 2009 - By

Playing against a team that has nothing to lose is probably the worst team to play against.  That proved true on Thursday night in Buffalo at HSBC Arena when the Amerks 11 game winning streak came to an end.  Portland was the better team on Thursday night and they won 6-3.

“You have to give them credit, they deserved to win tonight,” Benoit Groulx. “I’d rather give Portland credit than blaming our guys.”

The Rochester Americans lost.  Does that mean there is anything wrong?  Nope.

Alexander Salak explained after the game saying, “All of the guys try hard.”  What he went on to talk about was that if the team wasn’t playing hard there could be some concern, but there shouldn’t be.  It was just a loss.

Alexander Salak lost his first game of the season and was also pulled from a game for the first time.  Nothing to worry about, 8-1 is still an awesome record to have in your first year playing professionally in North America.

The Pirates played a great game of controlling the flow of the game.  They also did a great job defensively preventing the top guys on the Amerks team [...]Read More

Amerks Win 11th in a Row, Tie Franchise Record

November 11, 2009 - By

The Rochester Americans tied a franchise record tonight with their 11th straight win with the defeat of the Hamilton Bulldogs by the final score of 4-1.  Excellent effort by the Amerks team all night.  The offense did what it had to.  The defense played strong.  The goal tending was again spectacular.  It was a TEAM effort.

Hamilton has been on a hot streak themselves.  Prior to tonight’s game they had only lost one game in regulation and none on the road.  The game was set to be the first real test for the Amerks this season.

Jordan Henry agreed saying, “We were looking forward to this game and kind of had it marked on the calendar as a big test.”

Asked about what the winning streak means Chris Taylor said, “It means that we keep going and trying to get better.  We had some good spots and not so good.”

One of the defining moments of the game was the successful 5 on 3 penalty kill the Amerks had in the second period.  Salak stood on his head making some great saves and Chris Taylor and David Brine were equally as strong.  Once the penalty kill [...]Read More

Amerks 10 Game Winning Streak, One of Two Styres Promised

November 8, 2009 - By

The Rochester Americans defeated the Toronto Marlies Saturday night in front of 4,069 fans to extend their win streak to ten games, fulfilling one half of a promise by owner Curt Styres.

Last season Curt Styres had promised two 10 game winning streaks during the 2008/2009 season, at the time it was an absurd statement.  I wasn’t present for the comment but I think the part left off was him saying, “next season.”

Saturday nights game was another great team performance.  It’s really hard to believe at this point that they played this weekend without four key players.

The 10 game winning streak is now one game shy of tying the franchise record of 11 wins set during the 1984-1985 season.  It’s probably no coincidence that was the same season that Jody Gage and Ted Nolan played together, two guys responsible for the success of putting this current team together.

Rochester now improves to 11-1-1-0 with 23 points to stay in first place in the American Hockey League.  One game at a time.

“It’s hard to stay on top,” Chris Taylor said  “It’s hard to keep winning and winning and everyone wants to beat us.  It’s [...]Read More

Chris Taylor Strikes Again, Amerks Win in OT

November 7, 2009 - By

The Amerks made some mistakes and learned a valuable lesson tonight but in the end got what mattered most, a win and two points in the standings.  The Syracuse Crunch made a strong comeback after being down 3-0 heading into the third period and then scoring the tying goal with 14 seconds left in regulation to force overtime.

Chris Taylor saved the game scoring the game winning goal in overtime to extend the Amerks winning streak to nine games.  The win tied the record from the 1999-2000 season, the last time the Amerks won nine games.

Alexander Salak showed tonight that he is human after all allowing three goals on 29 shots.  He played a great game, the Crunch just found a way to finally beat him.

Mike Duco scored his first goal of the season at 9:15 of the first period.  Jason Garrison fired a hard shot from the blue line and Duco was in front of the net to get the rebound and back hand it past Crunch goaltender Kevin LaLande.

The second goal was scored when LaLande had gone behind the net to play the puck when Duco came from one side and [...]Read More

Salak Earns his First Shutout in Amerks 7th Straight Win

October 26, 2009 - By

10/25/2009.. Alexander Salak earned his first professional shutout and led the Rochester Americans to a 3-0 win over the goon squad known as the Syracuse Crunch.

It was the Amerks seventh win in a row and also their fourth win in five nights and they’re not showing any signs of slowing down.

With the win the Amerks are now in sole possesion of first place in the American Hockey League with 17 points.

Graham Mink scored the game winning goal at 2:45 of the first period with assists to Mike Caruso and Chris Taylor.

Caruso retrieved his own shot that went wide of the net and around the boards.  He grabbed the puck at the blue line and dumped it back in right to Mink who was all alone to score.

“I don’t know where the defensemen went,” Mink  said.  “He was there and maybe he was jumping into the rush. Caruso made a great play and I had enough time for the goalie to go down and get it over him.”

Jimmy Bonneau and Jon Mirasty fought for the third time in less than 24 hours at the half way mark of the first period.  [...]Read More

Amerks Come Back to Win in Over Time

October 24, 2009 - By

Michal Repik scored the game winner in OT to extend the Amerks winning streak to six games with a come from behind victory in Syracuse on Saturday night.  The Amerks were down 2-0 in the first period but found a way to come back and win the game 3-2 in overtime.

3:33 into the first period Jon Mirasty layed a huge hit on Beaverson against the boards.  There was no penalty called but Jimmy Bonneau was also on the ice and quick to go after Mirasty and get a fight going.  Mirasty should have been given a boarding penalty on that hit.

Tim Miller put the Crunch on the scoreboard first at 10:02 of the first period.  Miller had tipped in a slap shot by Nick Holden.  Jon Mirasty was also credited with an assist.

At the next faceoff Jimmy Bonneau and Jon Mirasty dropped the gloves a second time for a real fight.  Mirasty appeared to get in a few more direct punches than Bonneau but credit is due for Bonneau for busting open Mirasty’s left eye.

Maksim Mayorov scored four minutes later with an assist to Jared Aulin.

Jimmy Bonneau scored at 17:08 of [...]Read More

Salak, Taylor, and Brine Lead Amerks to Win

October 23, 2009 - By

It was close near the end of the third but the Amerks stayed strong on the ice and defeated the Albany River Rats by the final score of 2-1 for their fifth straight win.  The last time the Amerks had a winning streak like this was the start of the 2006/2007 season.

The Amerks are back on the ice Saturday night in Syracuse.  The Crunch are coming off of a 4-3 win over the Binghamton Senators Friday night.  It’ll be an interesting game.  Will the Amerks road legs stay strong?  Will the Crunch have home ice advantage?  Game time is at 7:30pm EST.

Let’s enjoy every minute of this season.

Heading into the game the River Rats were a perfect on the penalty kill, they had not allowed a goal to be scored in 21 power play attempts for the opposition.  Chris Taylor ended that streak.

The power play unit of Chris Taylor, Graham Mink, Jeff Taffe, Clay Wilson, and Jason Garrison worked the puck around the Rats zone and tired them out.  They did a superb job passing the puck around, taking quick shots when they could and then regaining control.

Jason Garrison took the [...]Read More

4th Straight Win for the Amerks

October 22, 2009 - By

The Amerks defeated the Binghamton Senators on Wednesday night to extend their winning streak to four games.  The last time the Amerks won four straight was the first week of November 2007.  I have not looked yet to find when the last time they won five straight in fear of jinxing the situation.

Assuming this style of play continues the questions about “last year” will fade away, but until then they’re still relevant.  It’s a different atmosphere around the team, the front offices, and even in the stands.

Tyler Plante explained further saying,  “It’s definitely a new situation for me and the Rochester dressing room.  It’s great.  We’re playing for the pride of the team. It’s a different feeling that I’ve never felt here before.  Before we were happy to win but now we’re happy to win for the heritage of the team, proud to wear the Amerks jerseys. Every night we go out there and try to wear our hearts on our sleeves.”

It was very strange back by the locker rooms after the game.  Usually the visitors side hallway is filled with guys stretching, cooling down, and getting their gear packed up.  On Wednesday night it was very.. [...]Read More

Brines OT Winner Caps an Incredible Comeback

October 17, 2009 - By

The Rochester Americans pulled together for a great comeback on the road Saturday afternoon in Toronto.  They were down 3-0 after the first period and it sounded like it was going to be a horrible game.  The Amerks gave the Marlies five, yes five power play opportunities in the first period.  The Marlies scored on two of them.  The Amerks battled back with two goals by Repik in the span of 1:05 in the second period, a short handed goal by Wilson in the third, and David Brine scored the game winner short handed in overtime.

I wasn’t able to watch or listen to the game so here’s the recap from the Amerks:

( Rochester, NY)… David Brine found the back of the net just three minutes into overtime to lift the Rochester Americans to a 4-3 win over the Toronto Marlies this afternoon at Ricoh Coliseum. The win was Rochester’s third straight and the first on the road this season for the Amerks (4-1-1-0) who now have nine points through just six games into the young season. The win also puts the Amerks into second place in the North Division, just one point behind the [...]Read More

Amerks Special Teams Dominates the Marlies

October 17, 2009 - By

The Rochester Americans did on Friday night what the Toronto Marlies did to them last season, dominated the game and won big.  This was an exciting game to watch and a game that made me really think that this team is the real deal. The Amerks beat the Toronto Marlies 5-2 with two power play goals and a short handed goal.

The Amerks went into Friday nights game ranked 9th in the league for it’s power play.  With two more power play goals they’ll continue to move up in the ranks.

Benoit Groulx talked about special teams saying, “As i said many times last year, special teams are key in this league.”

The Amerks set the tone within the first five minutes of the game.  They got the puck into the Marlies end and kept it there.  They were moving the puck around so easily and for so long they made a line change.  I looked to the person sitting behind me to ask if I was really seeing what I was seeing.

David Brine opened the scoring at 14:33 of the first period scoring a short handed goal assisted by Michal Repik.  It was Brines second goal of the [...]Read More

Cheesy Title Time.. Amerks Crunch Syracuse!

October 13, 2009 - By

If the Amerks can continue the style of game they played on Monday night they should be able to start winning some fans back into the building.

Everyone scored who is supposed to score.  The four goals were scored by Chris Taylor, Graham Mink, Jeff Taffe, and Michal Repik.  Four players that are here for that reason.

The goaltending was exciting to watch.  Alexander Salak was all over the ice… literally.  Sprawling all over the place with his arms, his legs, his stick, his body.  To say he played with an unorthodox style is an understatement.  He’s likely to raise the blood pressure of everyone in attendance.

Crunch goaltender Dan LaCosta stopped 11 of 12 shots faced in the second and a majority of those were great saves.  The Amerks were throwing pucks at him from all over the place and he continued to stop them.

Continuing on with the Amerks….

The Amerks killed off six Crunch power play opportunities, two of those were 5 on 3′s.

They were not pushed around by a “tougher” team.

They scored two power play goals.

Eight out of 18 skaters (excluding the goalies) for the Amerks scored a point in the game.  If [...]Read More
