Gameday 11-10-2008: Another Shot At the Moose

November 10, 2008 - By

Karl Stewart is out on the ice taking some shots today.  Not game ready though…he is in his warmup pants.  I expect him to be ready for Friday’s game.  But, that’s just me.

Jack Birch is here watching the team.  I sure hope he doesn’t think because we played one good game on Saturday that we are fine and just need more time to work on our problems.  Come on Jack…it’s overhaul time.  Instead of watching practice, why don’t you get on the phone and make some calls right now.  Everyone’s agents are working by 10 a.m.

Riley Emmerson continues to impress me with his work ethic.  You can tell he doesn’t just want to sit there and be a goon.  He is working hard to get himself onto the 4th line and get some ice time.  We saw him getting more ice time on Saturday and he didn’t screw up royally.  We asked Benoit Groulx about Emmerson getting more ice time, of course he stated the obvious that it depends how the game itself is going.  ”His role is to have a presence, but as he improves his skating and continues to check more he’ll earn chances [...]Read More

Riley Emmerson vs Guillaume Desbiens Fight Video

November 8, 2008 - By

One of the few highlights from the Amerks 5-1 loss on Friday night against the Manitoba Moose.  Riley Emmerson and Guillaume Desbiens dropped the gloves during the second period and went at it.

Amerks Lose 5-1 to Moose. Throw in the towel.

November 8, 2008 - By

The Manitoba Moose arrived in Rochester on Thursday night, and expected controlled every aspect of the game on Friday night.  Chances are the Moose are going to roll right over Syracuse on Saturday, and return to hand the Amerks their 12th loss of the season on Monday night.  Throw in the towel, this season is done.

The final score of Friday nights game was 5-1.  The lone Amerks goal was scored as the puck ended up down low behind the net, Repik and McArdle worked hard getting it free when Matthias was able to stuff it into the net past Moose goalie Cory Schneider.

Aside from the goal by Matthias and the Riley Emmerson vs Guillaume Desbiens fight, this game was disgusting.

Tyler Plante started in goal but was pulled after only playing 12:39 of the first period and allowing three goals on eight shots.  In defense of Plante, a goalie can only do so much as his teammates in front of him are out of position and all over the ice allowing opposing players to skate freely.

This team is going to end the season even worst than last years did unless something changes.  Can anyone really [...]Read More

Practice 10-29-2008: The Return Of Rory

October 29, 2008 - By

The day you have all been waiting for is here.  Rory Fitzpatrick has returned from his head injury and is practicing with the team.  Peter Aston is also back on the ice today after a day off with a sore hip.  We have eight defensemen on the ice now.  A nice sight to see.

The atmosphere is much different today.  There is no yelling and screaming, everyone is back on track.  The team has clearly taken what Benoit said yesterday to heart.  Everyone is working their hardest while still having fun (not too much fun, but celebrating when they score a fancy goal or something).

Like a few people who read yesterday’s article said, Benoit can’t yell at them everyday or the players will just start to tune him out.  It clearly seems like he knows how to run a team.  I still can’t believe the difference between this year’s practices and last year’s.  It’s like night and day.  You won’t see any strip shootout games happening this year.

The players appreciate a coach who treats them like men and not like children.  Like Drew Larman said last night at the library, they deserved the treatment they got [...]Read More

Videos of Saturday Night Fights

October 26, 2008 - By

Riley Emmerson, Mike Duco, Tanner Glass, Jon Mirasty, Ryan Garlock, and Dan Smith.. A Saturday night of fights between the Rochester Americans and Syracuse Crunch! I think I shrunk them down too much and lost some quality, will work on uploading clearer videos later.

Mike Duco vs Ryan Garlock

Round 1 – Jon Mirasty vs Riley Emmerson

Round 2 – Jon Mirasty vs Riley Emmerson

Tanner Glass vs Dan Smith – This never went any further due to Smiths injured thumb.

If You Can't Beat 'Em, Beat 'Em…Amerks Lose 6-1 To The Crunch

October 25, 2008 - By

The Rochester Americans lost tonight to the Syracuse Crunch in a sad 6-1 final score.  This, of course, is better than last year on the Crunch’s “Pink Out” night when the Amerks were creamed 9-2.

Emmerson made his AHL debut tonight and did a good job.  But, more on that later.

The first period started out with a quick epic fail when Starkov scored for the Crunch only 17 seconds into the game.  That was only the tip of the iceburg that was to come.

The Amerks were on the powerplay when Vigalante went to the box for tripping at 3:18.  That chance was short lived when Ellerby decided to get a penalty of his own at 4:02.  To add insult to injury, Drew Larman took yet another penalty, giving the Crunch a 4 on 3 powerplay.  The outcome of that situation is easy to imagine.  The Crunch (Wilson) scored their second goal of the night easily.

For the next ten minutes we fought off a few more penalty killing problems.  But, it wouldn’t last forever.  Wilson tallied his second goal of the night at 14:15 to put another nail in the coffin before the end of the [...]Read More

Amerks' Tuesday Practice; Meyer Returns

October 21, 2008 - By

There is a new face on the ice today.  That face stands about a full head above all the other players.  Looks like the Amerks are making good with their promise to get us a guy who can plow through goons like Mirasty (Syracuse Crunch) with one fluid punch.  This beast’s name is Riley Emmerson.  He stands at 6’8″ and weighs in at 248 lbs.  He was the tallest player drafted in the 2005 entry draft.
He was assigned to the Florida Everblades this seaon by the Minnesota Wild.

Like posted yesterday, Curt Styres didn’t just want a guy who can just drop the gloves.  Any team that looked on the Amerks’ bench during a game would have to notice Emmerson and bemore careful about the moves they make on the ice, knowing there is someone there who is going to protect his teammates.

Check a few of Riley’s fights out in some YouTube videos.

The very first thing I got to see when I sat down in my seat to watch practice today was Stefan Meyer getting on the ice.  It’s pretty exciting to see him out there…like a missing puzzle piece returning [...]Read More

Riley Emmerson Assigned to Amerks!

Riley Emmerson has been assigned to the Rochester Americans.   Check him out in some YouTube videos. Look for more information on him later today.

David Shantz Recalled to Panthers

October 16, 2008 - By

David Shantz was recalled from the Florida Everblades on Thursday to the Florida Panthers.  The Florida Everblades are set to open their regular season on Friday night.  It’s assumed that the Panthers have made this move to loan him out to another ECHL team.

Houston Aeros Assistant General Manager Troy G. Ward announced today that goaltender Anton Khudobin has been loaned to ECHL Florida Everblades, which would give the Blades a second goaltender.

David Shantz started the 07/08 season with the Rochester Americans before being reassigned to the Everblades.  He played in 14 games with the Amerks and had a record of 1-10-1.  His GAA was 4.07 and save pct was 0.863.  While his stats weren’t the best, he was also the product of a bad team in front of him.

When he was reassigned to the Everblades he played in 20 games, had a record of 11-5-3 with a 2.56 GAA and 0.916 save pct.

Rumors have been swirling that the Amerks are interested in LW Riley Emersson who currently plays for the Everblades but is property of the Minnesota Wild, this could be part of something in the works.  Emersson is 6’8″ and 246lbs and a known [...]Read More
