Don’t let the $50 price tag scare you away, the Craig Charron Celebrity Bartending Fundraiser was a great time according to those who went last year.. and the money raised is for a great reason, obviously.

(Rochester, NY)… The Rochester Americans Alumni Association will continue to honor Amerks Hall of Famer Craig Charron with a series of fundraisers this summer. Craig was a player, coach and family man who lost his battle with cancer on October 19, 2010.

The kickoff event is the Craig Charron Memorial Celebrity Bartending Fundraiser at Murphy’s Law (370 East Ave.) on Monday, July 25th. The event will take place at 7:00 p.m. and will feature Ryan Callahan, Rory Fitzpatrick, Brian Gionta, Scott Metcalfe, Scott Nichol, Jason Cipolla and other past and present NHL stars. To purchase a $50 ticket, which includes food and drinks, stop by The Sports Centre at MCC, Murphy’s Law or the Amerks office.

Amerks from Last Season Not Returning

Amerks from Last Season Not Returning

The Rochester Americans have announced the 2010-2011 training camp roster which brings in a whole group of new faces and names that we’ll get to know.  That also means a number of players that were on last years team are not returning.  There’s always a lot of changes over the summer with American Hockey League teams and almost impossible for most to keep up with everything.  So, in case you missed anything over the summer here’s a list of players not returning and where they are now.

Rory Fitzpatrick – Retired
Jamie Johnson – Grand Rapids Griffins
Mike York – Finland
Graham Mink – Peoria Rivermen. He was traded to the St Louis Blues in exchange for T.J. Fast.  With the money the Panthers saved by trading Mink they immediately signed Joe Callahan.
Jeff Taffe – Traded to the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for Marty Reasoner
Mathieu Roy – Signed 2way deal with Tampa Bay Lightning
Maxime Gratchev – Hartford Wolf Pack
Jordan Henry – KHL
Jimmy Bonneau – Hamilton Bulldogs
Chris Beckford-Tseu – unknown

Grading the 2009-2010 Amerks Player by Player

One week ago today we were mentally preparing for game 7 against the Abbotsford Heat and hoping for a legendary game.  It certainly turned out to be a legendary game, unfortunately not in favor of the Amerks.  As sports fans, it’s the type of loss that will live with us forever until another Calder Cup is won.  Until that happens next season, there’s still a number of things to discuss about the one that just ended and I’ll start by grading each of the players.

Thanks to Eric Bourgeois (frequent reader, supporter and die hard Amerks fan) who contributed to this.  There’s a couple things I disagreed with him on and noted.  You may agree or disagree yourself on a lot of things said and I’d love to hear your thoughts.  These grades are based on a lot more than just a stat sheet.

Starting with highest grade to lowest:

Jason Garrison: A-

Audio from 2010 Amerks Locker Cleanout, Vets, Nolan and Staats

The Amerks season is over and a few of the players spoke after their exit meetings and they cleaned out their lockers.  Uploading audio is a new feature and this one took me a little while longer as I’m uploading them to YouTube.  This way the audio is easier for people to share outside of this site.

Jamie Johnson was the most outspoken player because he does not plan to come back here next season.  Some people have criticized him for his words but if others were leaving they probably would have shared the same thoughts.  Everything said are valid points about the way he felt he was treated.  Johnson was the team leader in points with 27 goals and 44 assists.  He was also one of only two players that played in all 80 games.  Sure he had a rough stretch but so did everyone else, in the end he was there every day working hard.

Contract Status for Amerks Players Heading into Next Season

Now that the season is over for the Rochester Americans it’s time to take a look and see who is still under contract with the Panthers or Amerks, who is and who is not still likely to sign.  I grouped players by signed, likely to sign and RFA and UFA.  Under each category I put some guesses about the status of the players.

Currently Under Contract for 10/11:

Coaches: Benoit Groulx and Jason Cipolla

Goalies: Alexander Salak, Marc Cheverie

Defense: Michael Caruso, Keaton Ellerby, Adam Comrie, James DeLory

Forwards: Evgeny Dadonov, Michal Repik, Brady Calla, Graham Mink, Chris Taylor, Shawn Matthias, Victor Oreskovich, Eric Selleck, AJ Jenks

One Way: Clay Wilson and Jeff Taffe are signed but to one way contracts with the Florida Panthers.  If they don’t fit into their plans it’s still possible the Panthers will try and have them clear waivers to be sent to the Amerks.

Listen to Amerks Game 7 Post Game Interviews

Here’s some audio from the postgame interviews in the locker room following the Amerks loss in game 7.  I’m trying something new here posting the audio and is something I’ll try and do more of next season.  As you listen to the interviews you’ll probably find it interesting hearing Groulx talk about the other team being ready.  You can hear the frustration in the voice of Rory Fitzpatrick.  You can hear Chris Taylor say he just does as he is told.

Getting Through a Game 7 and Two Updates

Every hardcore hockey fan in Rochester right now probably has the game on their mind tonight.  There’s a great article linked below that describes the feelings leading up to a game 7, even if it’s only the first round.

Two updates from Kevin Oklobzija at Hockey O-Zone, Rory Fitzpatrick is playing and Kevin says he was told that Graham Mink is not playing.  No real known reason why.  Is he hurt?  Family issues?  Benoit Groulx playing tricks on the Heat?  We’ll have to wait until warmups or even later to find out.

Amerks Hold on Tight and Defeat Marlies in Shootout

The Rochester Americans got the job done on Friday night defeating the Toronto Marlies to clinch home ice advantage for their first round in the 2010 Calder Cup Playoffs.  It may not have been pretty as the Amerks gave up a three goal lead but they found a way to get the job done, and that seems to have been the story of the season.

There’s a couple different ways to look at the game.  One of which is that it was an ugly victory and not the way you want to play during game #79 heading into the playoffs.  Another way to look at it is that the Amerks had four players who’ve played under 10 professional games, are still missing a lot of others and that they fulfilled their goal of making the playoffs with a much needed win.

One game remains on the regular season schedule and that’s Saturday evening on the road against the Syracuse Crunch.  According to Chris Taylor just because the team has clinched the playoffs and home ice don’t expect the team to take the night off.

A Few Items from Amerks Morning Skate and Pink Boards

The Amerks just finished up their typical morning skate at Blue Cross Arena prior to the last regular season home game tonight against the Toronto Marlies.  Once the Amerks get at leats one point or the Abbotsford Heat lose a game the dates for the first home games of the playoffs will be officially announced.

A couple of quick updates:

Alexander Salak is going to be getting the start in net.

Rory Fitzpatrick is playing.  It’ll be his last regular season home game prior to retiring but like everyone else hopes to be playing into the month of June.

Mathieu Roy is back on the ice practicing but not ready to play.  He said his ankle is, “getting there.”

John de Gray appears to be sitting out another one with an “upper body injury.”

There’s a lot of dangers in covering hockey, especially sitting near the glass either where my seats are.  A couple seasons ago the blade of someones stick broke and it came flying over the glass but I was paying attention and able to catch it.  A friend was hit in the head with a puck during warmups once and had to get a couple of [...]Read More

Griffins Double Up Amerks to Halt Winning Streak

The Amerks had the odds stacked against them against Grand Rapids with majority of the teams defense either called up or injured.  The Griffins were able to score six goals against the Amerks in their 6-3 win which also denied the Amerks the chance to clinch home ice advantage.  The magic number is now one point.  The Amerks need either one point in one of their last two games to clinch home ice.  The other possibility is that they need the Abbotsford Heat to lose once in regulation in one their final two games.

Jordan Henry and Michael Caruso were the teams top two defensemen on Wednesday and had assistance from Luke Beaverson, Matt Duffy, Carl Hudson and Corey Syvret.  Those guys work hard at what they do but that’s more of an ECHL calibre defense than that of a 2nd place AHL team.  Rory Fitzpatrick did not make the trip, I assume he’s resting up his groin for the weekend.

Gameday: Bears Going for History and Amerks Injuries, Additions, Releases

The Amerks have a chance to be a part of history again this season as the Hershey Bears go for the AHL record for most wins in a season.  The Bears are currently tied with the previous record holder the Binghamton Senators who set the record at 57 wins during the 1992-1993 season.  Rochester has been horrible on Friday nights al season so if there was ever a night to break out of that cycle it’d be tonight.

A win would not only be exciting but a huge boost of morale to the team heading into the last few games and the playoffs.  The Bears are at this point considered the favorites to win the Calder Cup yet again.  Anything can happen though, here’s hoping an upset occurs tonight!

Tyler Plante has been the go to goalie for the Amerks in recent weeks and there’s no reason he would not get the start tonight.  In 7 starts in March he was 5-1-1 with a 1.88 GAA and .942 save percentage.  The only way to stop the Bears from scoring 1.88 GAA and .942 save percentage.  The only way to stop the Bears from scoring though would be to put a [...]Read More

Marlies Capitalize on Amerks Bad Defensive Game to Win

The Rochester Americans had a chance to clinch a spot in the playoffs on Sunday afternoon if they defeated the Toronto Marlies and the Lake Erie Monsters lost in regulation to the San Antonio Rampage.  Former Rochester American forward Stefan Meyer and the Rampage did their part defeating the Monsters in the final 90 seconds but unfortunately the Amerks lost in a shootout, their first shootout loss of the season.

“Last night (7-3 win over the Marlies) I thought we played a pretty solid game and today i thought we played one period,” Benoit Groulx said about the game which also summarizes this team.  Inconsistent.

Tyler Plante played another great game for the Amerks making 40 saves and is certainly making the case for himself to be the goalie in the final six games and possibly into the post season.  Two of the Marlies three goals were tipped in and the third he had no help from the defense as Andre Deveraux walked right in front of the net.  Almost 15 minutes after the game ended he was still sitting in his stall with his pads on, a sure sign he was not happy with the outcome of the [...]Read More
