Mink Says No Excuses, Amerks Injuries Healed

January 5, 2010 - By

The excuses for the Amerks going 5-8-1 through the month of December ranges from the depleted lineup due to injuries and call ups, the travel, the fatigue, and the lack of practice.  As of practice this morning there is not a single player on the Amerks list of injured players, everyone has been cleared to play.  That includes Alexander Salak, Tyler Plante, Mike York, Mike Duco, Shawn Matthias, Rory Fitzpatrick, and Luke Beaverson.

I had planned to write more about all of those things in the first sentence but Graham Mink did all the work for me after practice on Tuesday morning.  I asked Mink if the lack of practices has had anything to do with the recent skid to which he replied, “We need to start playing better hockey, there’s no doubt about it.  Maybe it does (losing due to no practices), i don’t know.  We’ll see this weekend.”

Asking about the injuries and call ups he said,”There’s always injuries and call ups.  I’ve played against teams that have been missing a lot of guys and played really well.  We cant use that as an excuse we’ve got to look in the mirror and play [...]Read More

Amerks Fall From First in Loss to Dogs'

December 30, 2009 - By

If I were to write a full recap of the game it would contain one word, snoozefest.  The team just could not get things going offensively.  The team has another game on Thursday evening at 5pm on the road against the Lake Erie Monsters.  The Monsters have been playing well lately, we’ll see what happens.

Here’s the Amerks press release about the game:

(Hamilton, December 30)… The Hamilton Bulldogs recaptured first place in the North Division with a 4-1 win over the Rochester Americans tonight at Copps Coliseum. The win moved Hamilton (21-8-2-3, 47 points) one point ahead of the Amerks (22-11-2-0, 46 points) for the top spot in the division.

The loss ended Rochester’s streak of earning a point in nine straight games against Hamilton and extended the Amerks’ road losing streak to four games. It also interrupted the Amerks’ two-game winning streak. Despite the setback, Rochester still leads the season series with a 3-1-1-0 record.

J.T. Wyman and Mikael Johansson led Hamilton with two points each tonight (1+1). Bulldogs’ goalie Cedrick Desjardins earned the win in goal with 24 saves and held Rochester to one goal. The Amerks got a goal from Chris Taylor and a 20-save effort [...]Read More

Amerks Getting Back on Track with 5-3 Win Over B-Sens

December 28, 2009 - By

After a month long skid for the Rochester Americans I believe that things are headed back in the right direction.  The Amerks won their second game of the weekend by defeating the Binghamton Senators 5-3 in front of 4,367 in downtown Rochester on Sunday evening.  There are still some concerns, but the lineup that has been depleted by call ups and injuries seems to be finding it’s way.

The AHL has 43 transactions for the Amerks just in the month of December and there’s still a few days left.  That is a lot of change.  Within the month of December was also a number of injuries, the tail end of a six game road trip, a hectic travel schedule, and very few regular practices.  Those are not excuses, they are facts that impact consistency and chemistry.  It’s only two wins, but they’re wins that will give the team a much needed boost of confidence.

It also helps to have Jeff Taffe back in the lineup playing on a line with Jamie Johnson and Michal Repik.  Those three players combined for a total of six points on Sunday.  The two assists for Johnson gives him 32 points [...]Read More

Monsters Scare Away Amerks; Rochester Drops Fourth Straight

December 22, 2009 - By

The Amerks dropped their fourth straight game on Tuesday night heading into the Christmas break.  I’m changing my wish list to ask for one thing, two big wins this coming weekend.  A lot of things are not going well for this team right now.  There’s also a lot of things that are contributing to things not going well.  There’s been a real lack of good practice time due to the schedule.  The lineup is all mixed up.  No one has faith in Chris Beckford-Tseu yet Ryan Mior was called up and expected to carry the game, something he did not do.

The team has off through Saturday for Christmas break so what we can hope for is a well rested team on Saturday along with hopefully some players returning from Florida.  A decent crowd is expected on Saturday night, hopefully it’ll be enough to put some energy in the team to pull out a win.

I saw 95% of the game but not enough to write a decent recap, so here’s the Amerks press release recapping the game:

(Rochester, NY)… The Rochester Americans extended their season-high losing streak to four games tonight, following a 6-2 loss [...]Read More

Amerks Send Mior, Duffy, and King Elsewhere

December 8, 2009 - By

With the completion of the long road trip the Amerks announced some roster changes on Tuesday.

Goaltender Ryan Mior was released from his PTO and he’ll return to the Dayton Gems of the IHL.  Mior played well in his two games with the Amerks and I expect he’ll be kept on speed dial if he’s needed.  Mior played in two games for the Amerks.  He made 30 saves in the teams 2-1 win on Sunday night in Abbotsford.  He also played last Wednesday in the teams 2-1 loss in Manitoba where he made 22 saves.

Colt King was on loan and returned to Rapid City.  In the two games he played for the Amerks in Abbotsford he did not really make any kind of impression.  He deserves a break though considering the distance traveled and not getting a chance to really practice with the team.  He was signed to a two way deal so we can expect to see him back at some point this season.  He was not the power forward providing toughness that was expected, but then again the games he played in were not very physical.

Matt Duffy was reassigned to the Florida [...]Read More

Amerks End Road Trip With a 2-1 Win; Injury Updates

December 7, 2009 - By

It wasn’t pretty but the game was full of effort and the Amerks were able to end their six game road trip with a 2-1 win over the Abbotsford Heat.  They end the road trip with three wins and three losses, respectable based on the circumstances.

The game was scoreless until 7:27 of the third period when Brett Sutter put a wrist shot past Ryan Mior from the face off circle.  Sutter had the breakaway and was able to get the shot off before Keaton Ellerby was able to get in front of him.

Ville Koistinen answered back at 11:04 of the third working hard going to the net to get one past Leland Irving to tie the game 1-1.

Michal Repik scored the game winner at 14:48 thanks to a big mistake by John Negrin of the Heat in front of the net.  Shawn Matthias made the initial pass to Repik who put a shot on net.  The rebound stayed in front of the net and Negrin put the puck right on Repiks stick and he was able to put it in the net.

Ryan Mior made 30 saves and played an impressive game.  It’ll [...]Read More

Two Goals for Rome Leads Moose to 2-1 Win Over Amerks

December 3, 2009 - By

Photo by Travis Golby at MooseHockey.com

The Rochester Americans wrapped up their fourth game of a season long six game road trip by losing to the Manitoba Moose by the final score of 2-1.  With the loss the Amerks dropped to 18-4-1-0 for the season and 2-2-0-0 on the road trip.  That’s right, only their 4th loss out of 23 games.  This was the first time the Amerks have lost when they’ve scored the first goal of the game.

It only took Graham Mink a total of 26 seconds to score the only goal for the Amerks.  Mink took the puck towards the net and was able to just barely get his stick on the puck and slid it through the legs of Cory Schneider.

This was Ryan Mior’s first regular season professional game and he played well, he certainly kept the Amerks in the game.  Mior made 22 saves in the game, including a penalty shot by Dan Sexton.  Sexton went with a back hand shot but Mior was able to get a small piece of the puck and deflected it high over the net.

Mior and Amerks coach Benoit Groulx know each other [...]Read More

Bonneau Signs, Friday Morning Practice, Party Deck

October 2, 2009 - By

The Amerks are on the ice this morning for possibly the last practice before their first game on Saturday night at home against the Lake Erie Monsters.  As of right now Benoit Groulx has tomorrow morning scheduled off but that could change any at any minute.

Post Practice Update: Jimmy Bonneau and Jon Landry signed a PTO contracts with the Amerks prior to practice this morning which allowed them to be on the ice.  Victor Oreskovich and Trevor Gillies are still negotiating with the team with discussions going well.  I’m sure both will be signed soon.  Goalie Ryan Mior was released.

The first thing you’ll probably notice in the arena tomorrow is the new “Party Deck” located behind at the zamboni entrance end of the arena.  The deck includes sections 103, 102, 101, 129, and 128.  The seats have been taken out and a platform is setup for group rentals.  Lewis Staats said that one of the things they noticed last year traveling around the league was that Rochester was one of the few arenas that did not have an area where fans could be right near the action.  The team was able to work with [...]Read More

Victor Oreskovich during the Amerks vs Crunch game on 9/29/2009

Here’s my pics from the Amerks vs Crunch game on 9/29/2009 in Syracuse.

The Amerks won 4-2 (game recap)

I don’t consider myself a professional photographer at all and chances are you may have a better camera than me.  After two seasons of taking thousands of pictures I’m finally getting around to uploading the decent ones.  Just about all of the pictures you see used on this site are my own.

You can view all of my pics at http://flickr.com/letsgoamerks, I’ve tried to start labelling a lot of them so if you’re looking for a specific player you can do a search.

Lastly, if anyone out there uses a Canon PowerShot S5 IS and can offer me any tips I’ll take them!  Here’s the pics:

Amerks Defeat the Crunch with a Strong Performance

September 30, 2009 - By

The Amerks won a game on the road in Syracuse.  Amazing.  What an odd drive home that was talking about how well the team played instead of the other way around.  With two minutes left in the game my sons face lit up with excitement that he finally saw a win in Syracuse, something he’s never witnessed before in his life.

Ok, back to ground level, it was only a preseason game.. but I’ll take it.

The team that played on Tuesday night in Syracuse was a completely different team than the one that played on Sunday night.  The team had some chemistry, some cohesion, the passes were crisp, bodies were thrown around, goals were scored, and there was blood.  What more can you ask for in a hockey game?

I knew we were in for a good game when players were chirping at each other during warmups.   Trevor Gillies for the Amerks was stretching near the red line at the end of warmups when a couple of pucks came across the ice in his direction.  How did they get there?  Kevin Harvey of the Syracuse Crunch.  Warmups ended with Gillies tossing a puck back towards Gillies and the two [...]Read More

Jeff Taffe, Preseason Game #3 vs Crunch, End of Camp

September 29, 2009 - By

The Amerks wrapped up training camp this morning at the always freezing cold ESL Centre in Henrietta.  The team will also finish there preseason with a game tonight in Syracuse against the Crunch at the On Center.  The puck drops just after 7pm and I’ll be there.  Tickets are $5, no idea if they’ll charge more at the door.

The Florida Panthers today placed Jeff Taffe on waivers.  There’s very little chance he’ll be claimed off of waivers based on his current contract.  He’s signed to a two way deal this season and a one way NHL deal in 2010/2011.  I doubt an NHL team see’s that much value in him, or at least we can hope.  I’ll try to find out tonight if there’s any chance he’ll fly back on his own to join the Amerks.

Tonight’s game is an opportunity for the first two lines to try and continue building some chemistry on the ice.  It’s also a game for a few players to get a last look by the team prior to either being released or offered deals to go play with the Everblades.

The line of Dadonov, Taylor, and Mink looks to be our top line [...]Read More

Amerks Fall to Monsters Despite Late Comeback

September 26, 2009 - By

(Strongsville, Ohio)…  Despite staging a late third-period comeback, the Rochester Americans fell 2-1 tonight to the Lake Erie Monsters at Hoover Arena in southern Cleveland. The game was the first of three for Rochester for the 2009 preseason.

Brock Bradford broke a 1-1 tie and netted the game-winner with just four seconds left in regulation to give the Monsters the 2-1 win. Kevin Schaeffer tallied Lake Erie’s first goal earlier in the first period. Lake Erie goaltender and Rochester native Billy Sauer logged a 25-save performance.

Ryan Mior and Chris Beckford-Tseu combined for a 27-save effort and second-year forward Andrew Sweetland scored Rochester’s lone goal of the contest.

17 seconds into the game Rochester’s Tom Harrison and Lake Erie’s T.J. Reynolds dropped the gloves

The Amerks nearly jumped out to an early 1-0 lead early in the first period as Lee Jubinville one-timed a nifty pass from defenseman Matt Duffy, but Sauer was quick to make the save.

Lake Erie got on the board first as Schaeffer beat Mior high glove-side to give the hometown Monsters a 1-0 lead at 5:01 of the opening frame. Ryan Stoa received the lone assist on the play.

After [...]Read More
