Sources: G Jacob Markstrom signs with Florida Panthers

May 28, 2010 - By

An expected move, but great to see that the signing of Markstrom is official.  Dale Tallon will have his work cut out for him to place.  Markstrom and members of the Panthers organization have said they planned to start him in Rochester, but that could all change if Tomas Vokoun is traded.  We’ll have to wait and see.  Either way, the Panthers are looking pretty strong in goal with this kid now in the system.

Sources close to the Swedish Elite League have informed LitterBoxCats.com that Panthers goaltending prospect Jacob Markstrom – whom many observers consider the best netminder currently outside the NHL – has signed a 3-year entry-level contract with Florida. Details of the deal have not been disclosed.

Markstrom – fresh off a bronze medal in the recently concluded IIHF World Championship in Germany – is a second round selection (31st overall) by Florida in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, and is widely viewed as the Panthers’ “future” in net.

This was an expected development, as GM Dale Tallon recently stated he and Markstrom’s agent were speaking regularly. More to follow soon.

Panthers Call up Alexander Salak

December 1, 2009 - By

Alexander Salak vs Crunch 10-25-2009The move that was expected has become official, Alexander Salak will board a flight in the morning to Florida. Based on the reports coming out of Florida there’s still a chance Vokoun could dress for the game but Salak will be needed if he’s not able to.

Alexander Salak led the Amerks to a 4-1 win over the Manitoba Moose on Tuesday night in Manitoba.  Salak has won 15 games this season.  His only loss came on November 12th against the Portland Pirates.

Hopefully Salak will be back for the games on Saturday and Sunday against Abbotsford.

Chris Beckford-Tseu is expected to get the start for the Amerks on Wednesday night, we all know the history with him.  Hopefully he shows up and plays the best game of his career.

Duffy to the Blades; Salak to the Panthers

October 7, 2009 - By

The regular season is less than a week old and players are starting to collect some frequent flyer miles.

Alexander Salak was called back up to the Florida Panthers after he had already landed in Rochester.  I should have known Tuesday morning that something was up when he was not in the locker room but Duco, Repik, and Garrison were.

Current Panthers backup goalie Scott Clemmensen had to attend to some family business this week.  The Panthers next game is on Friday against Carolina and with the uncertainty of when Clemmensen will return they needed a second goalie.

The Amerks next game is Friday night as well against the Lake Erie Monsters and even if Salak stayed here or does return I think Tyler Plante will be getting the start in net.

Defenseman Matt Duffy was handed a plane ticket as well for his assignment to the Florida Everblades.  Duffy had a strong few games at the end of last season when he joined the Amerks.  Duffy has a promising career ahead of him, he was just an odd man out with the current roster.

The Amerks top six defenseman will be Rory Fitzpatrick, Clay Wilson, [...]Read More

A few Panthers/Amerks Related Stories

September 1, 2009 - By

The Florida Panthers open training camp in less than two weeks (Sept 12th) and most of the players are set to return to Florida next week (Sept 6th) so it’s time to share a few Panthers related stories (courtesy of The Litter Box) and how they relate to the Amerks.  The Litter Box is an excellent site that is part of the growing SB Nation, an excellent network of sports blogs.  Keep that site bookmarked if you want to stay up to date on the Panthers.

*** Panthers plan season without GM — This probably explains the lack of activity by the Panthers this summer.  On the flipside this summer has felt like a dream come true for Amerks fans compared to the previous few years.  The owner has been busy spending money signing players building a team that should be a contender, at least on paper.  One concern has been that the Panthers could call up some of these players should they need help, such as Jeff Taffe.

*** Panthers Roster — speaking of Taffe, the Panthers web site was updated with the teams roster to also include numbers and on that roster is Jeff [...]Read More

When Was the Last Time The Amerks…

December 9, 2008 - By

Here’s some “fun facts” I guess you could call them about the last time certain things were achieved by or against the Rochester Americans.  A few items that stick out more than others: The last Amerk to get a hat-trick at Blue Cross arena was Stefan Meyer on December 16, 2006, nearly two years ago.  Scott McCrory was the last Amerk to score four goals in one game over 18 years ago on November 3, 1990.  It’s been less than a year since an opposing player has scored four goals against us.

One item I’ll add of my own: The Amerks have not been shutout yet this season!

Amerks had a shutout:

  • Home: Mike Brodeur vs Albany River Rats, 12/07/08 (game #24), 4-0
  • Away: Adam Dennis @ Toronto, 2/2/08 (game #51), 3-0

Amerks were shutout:

  • Home: Karl Goehring, Syracuse, 4/11/08 (game #78), 0-4
  • Away: Dan LaCosta @ Syracuse, 3/14/08 (game #365), 0-3

Amerks win in overtime:

  • Home: vs Albany, 2/20/08, (game #58), 2-1 (Anthony Stewart)
  • Away: @ Lake Erie, 3/20/08, (game #67), 5-4 (David Brine)

Amerks lose in overtime:

  • Home:vs Toronto, 2/1/08, (game #50), 2-3 (Jeremy Williams)
  • Away: @Binghamton, 3/15/08, (game [...]Read More
