The First Free Agent Signed for the Amerks is Rick Schofield

The first free agency signing for the Rochester Americans has quietly occurred with Rick Schofield being signed.  Schofield scored eight goals and had nine assists as a center that played in 73 regular season games last season for the Syracuse Crunch.  He played in four seasons for Lake Superior State University and was signed by the Anaheim Ducks as an undrafted free agent.

Jonathan Bombulie, covers the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, always puts together a list of the Top 250 AHL free agents and he had Schofield listed as #233.  The list is not the ultimate ranking but everyone who covers the AHL considers it a good one.

Jay McKee Not Returning as an Amerks Assistant Coach

Jay McKee Not Returning as an Amerks Assistant Coach

There’s just over two weeks until the start of free agency and the Buffalo Sabres will have a big task on their hands in rebuilding the Rochester Americans roster.  One of the many changes ahead was disclosed on Monday when it was announced that Jay McKee would not be brought back as an assistant coach.  It was the first year for McKee as a coach in professional hockey.

Kevin Oklobzija wrote the following:

In some ways, it’s surprising that the organization wouldn’t want McKee to continue to lend his expertise — 13 years of NHL experience surely translates into some sort of valuable knowledge. McKee was very hands-on when it came to teaching the defensemen during practice.

At the same time, assistant coach Chadd Cassidy primarily handled the defense during games, so perhaps their duties overlapped. Who knows, maybe there was even a difference in philosophies.

Somehow I tend to believe there just wasn’t the proper cohesiveness between the coaches that is necessary on a staff. Cassidy and Rolston have been together for six seasons (five with USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program). McKee was brought in I think more by folks in Buffalo and not necessarily by Rolston. They tried [...]Read More

Sabres Signed Nathan Lieuwen to Entry Level Contract

A few days late but up for anyone who missed it and archive purpose.  As of right now, the Sabres have Nathan Lieuwen and Connor Knapp under contract for the minor leagues.  David Leggio and Drew MacIntyre are unrestricted free agents.

You can always click on roster at the top of the site to get a list of players currently under contract.  This isn’t speculation of who may or may not return, it’s players signed.  http://www.letsgoamerks.com/roster/

SABRES SIGN GOALTENDER LIEUWEN TO ENTRY-LEVEL CONTRACT

(Rochester, NY)… Buffalo Sabres General Manager Darcy Regier today announced that the team has signed goaltender Nathan Lieuwen to a three-year, entry-level contract.

Lieuwen (6’5”, 189 lbs., 8/8/91) finished the 2011-12 season ranked third among all Western Hockey League goaltenders with a 2.50 goals against average and ranked fifth with a .914 save percentage. In his second season as the starting goaltender for the Kootenay Ice, Lieuwen went 27-20-6-2 with three shutouts.

In parts of five WHL seasons with Kootenay, Lieuwen posted a regular season record of 85-59-8-7. He backstopped the Ice to a Memorial Cup Championship in 2010-11, earning WHL Playoff MVP honors after going 16-2-1 with a 2.24 [...]Read More

Amerks Sign Ryan Grimshaw; Catenacci Out; Season is on the Line

Amerks Sign Ryan Grimshaw; Catenacci Out; Season is on the Line

The Amerks are on the road tonight against the Hamilton Bulldogs, a team they have only beat twice out of nine games so far this season.  If the Amerks are going to make the postseason they’ll need to win at least four out of their last five games.  If there was a way to paint a bright picture I’d be trying my best but it’s easier to say that the season is on the line tonight.

The defense will be playing without Matt MacKenzie (upper body) and Dennis Persson (lower body) so they signed Ryan Grimshaw, from Greece, to an amateur tryout contract.  Grimshaw just finished four years at Harvard and played three games with Trenton in the ECHL.  After the Buffalo Sabres finish their season today in Boston they’ll send Brayden McNabb and TJ Brennan to join the Amerks in Glens Falls for the game on Sunday afternoon, hopefully it’s not too late.

Regarding Dan Catenacci:

Center Dan Catenacci has not played yet. He joined the Amerks after signing his contract with the Sabres but he isn’t healthy. He was struck in the ankle by a shot in his season finale with Owen Sound of the OHL.

Foligno Back for his Final Games as a Rochester American; Tropp Sent Down Too

Foligno Back for his Final Games as a Rochester American; Tropp Sent Down Too

The Buffalo Sabres were eliminated from any post season chances on Thursday night so they have sent Marcus Foligno and Corey Tropp back to the Amerks.  The two players will join the Amerks in Hamilton for the game on Saturday night.

I think it’s safe to say these final five games for Rochester will be the last five regular season games that Foligno ever puts on an Amerks sweater.  The season started with him getting into a fight in the first week, to questioning if he knew how to pass the puck to becoming a dominant player who earned a call up and has been an important part of the Buffalo Sabres roster.  He’s proven he can be an NHL player every night.  If he isn’t already penciled into the Sabres lineup for next season it’d be a big surprise.

Back in early February I wrote a short novel about Foligno developing into a dominant player, you can read that here (warning: it’s long).

Corey Tropp has also been sent back to the Amerks.  He’s proven he has a future in the NHL as well, maybe not as quickly as Foligno but he can quickly get back there next [...]Read More

Playoff Ticket Prices for Amerks First Two Rounds; Brayden McNabb Called Up

Playoff Ticket Prices for Amerks First Two Rounds; Brayden McNabb Called Up

The first bit of news out this morning is that the Sabres have called up Brayden McNabb on an emergency basis to fill in for Tyler Myers who has been suspended for three games.  It had to be a coin flip between McNabb and TJ Brennan as both have been playing great lately and capable of a call up if needed.

It’s also hard to believe that the Rochester Americans 2011/2012 season is already winding down with only 15 more games in the regular season, six of those at home.  The Amerks current stretch of 7-1 has given them a push that couldn’t have been predicted back in early February.  The team is playing smart hockey and David Leggio is playing at the top of his game which is leading to wins in the standings.

As of right now with the current predictions (listed at the bottom of this post) the Amerks will finish tied for 7th place in the Western Conference to make the playoffs.  This team has beat the best teams throughout the season and also fallen flat at times during the season so once they’re in anything is possible!  Well, assuming the Sabres don’t require any more [...]Read More

View the Amerks Clear Day Roster; Drew Schiestel to the Texas Stars

The biggest news of the day is that Drew Schiestel has been assigned to the Texas Stars.  He had been an odd man out defenseman for much of the season never fully recovered from a knee injury.  He also made a few costly mistakes in games and was sat out after those were made.  Based on the clear day roster released, Nick Crawford was put in his place.  Schiestel was drafted in the 2nd round/59th overall in the 2007 draft and in the final year of his three year entry level contract.  The Amerks do not appear to be getting anyone in return for Schiestel at this time otherwise they would’ve been on the clear day roster below.

A reassignment isn’t a trade, it’s just that, a reassignment.  The Sabres will still retain his rights and before they assigned him they likely advised him or his agent that they plan to walk away from his contract at the end of the season or did this just so that he could play and not sit around.

The Texas Stars are currently in last place in the Western Conference so it could be a way to keep Drew Schiestel in action instead [...]Read More

Amerks Look for Back to Back Wins vs Marlies; MacKenzie Up from Gwinnett

Amerks Look for Back to Back Wins vs Marlies; MacKenzie Up from Gwinnett

The Amerks are back at home tonight at 6:05pm against the Toronto Marlies for the second of a home and home series.  The Amerks beat the Marlies 2-1 on Saturday afternoon in Toronto, Paul Szczechura scored the game winning goal at 8:57 of the third period on the power play.  Brayden McNabb passed the puck to Szczechura at the Amerks blue line and Szczechura went straight down the ice past three Marlies to score on the breakaway.  David Leggio had 21 saves in the win.  Evan Rankin had scored the first goal for the Amerks when he was parked in front of the Marlies net and put away a rebound off a shot that Phil Varone took.

Ron Rolston told the D&C:

“We were putting pressure on them (on the previous power plays) and didn’t get a lot of great looks,” Amerks coach Ron Rolston said. “(On the goal) we got a breakout and on the entry we got the puck in middle. It was a great individual effort by Paul. Just what we needed to get us a win tonight.”

Marcus Foligno was called up on Saturday afternoon by the Sabres as an extra forward in Vancouver, he [...]Read More

Zack Kassian: The Legendary Player that Never Was

Zack Kassian: The Legendary Player that Never Was

When trade deadline day started earlier this week on Monday there wasn’t much talk about Zack Kassian going anywhere.  He was a player with a lot of hype and a lot of potential.  He was a player that Rochester Americans fans and Buffalo Sabres fans thought highly of and of what he was going to become.  Kassian was supposed to be this hard hitting, gritty, agitating forward that no one would want to play against.  For whatever reason he wasn’t really any of those things.  Some people seemed to notice and care.  Others were fine that he wasn’t those things at least in The AHL because he was scoring.  In terms of his legacy in the Buffalo Sabres organization he’ll go down as a disappointing player who in 30 games played with the Amerks and 27 games with the Sabres never fulfilled his role.

Kassian played the first 18 games of his professional career with the Amerks before being called up for the first time on November 11th at the height of the Sabres injury riddled season.  Brad Boyes had been injured in a game against Boston which opened up a spot for Kassian.  At the time Kassian had 7 [...]Read More

Szydlowski Back to the Amerks; MacKenzie and Fienhage to Gwinnett

Szydlowski Back to the Amerks; MacKenzie and Fienhage to Gwinnett

Three minor moves this week for the Amerks moving players to and from the Gwinnett Gladiators.

Matt MacKenzie was finally cleared to play after missing 34 games with the Amerks and was sent to the Gladiators.  He had his leg sliced open by a skate in December and after a long recovery is finally ready for action again.  This was the first season for the rookie and has an entry level contract signed through the 2013-2014 season so we’ll see him again next season.

Corey Fienhage was also sent to the Gladiators after playing the role of the extra defenseman for most of the season for the Amerks.  In 17 games Fienhage had four assits and 20 penalty minutes.  He’s a defenseman who tries to use his size but at times was overmatched in the AHL.  He was only signed to an AHL contract.

Shawn Szydlowski also sent out a tweet that he’s headed back to Rochester.  In the past six games with the Gladiators he has scored one goal and also has three assists.

Information about the Deadline for AHL Playoff Rosters

Information about the Deadline for AHL Playoff Rosters

The NHL trade deadline is today (February 27, 2012) and any moves made can and usually do have some sort of impact on American Hockey League teams but that doesn’t mean moves are over.  Teams can still trade players in the AHL and any moves have to be done by the deadline of March 5th at 3pm eastern time which is when clear day rosters are due and usually announced a day or two later.  Also, any players in the NHL must be on an AHL roster today February 27 at 3pm to be eligible for inclusion.  Corey Tropp was already sent to the Amerks today and we can likely expect Zack Kassian to be sent down as well and then immediately called back up.

What is the clear day roster?  According to AHL by-laws, only those players listed on a team’s Clear Day roster are eligible to compete in the remainder of the 2011-12 AHL regular season and in the 2012 Calder Cup Playoffs, unless emergency conditions arise as a result of recall, injury or suspension.

That still leaves plenty of room to make changes to the roster but it’s done to prevent teams from sending down half of [...]Read More
