Amerks Dim the Stars with a 9-4 Win

Amerks Dim the Stars with a 9-4 Win

It was only one game but it was an enjoyable game.  Out of 18 skaters on the ice only five ended the game without a point for the Rochester Americans, a pretty impressive accomplishment.  There were seven different players who scored goals and 11 different players tallied assists.  The last time the Amerks had a high scoring effort like that was December 16, 2006 when they had a 10-4 win over the Binghamton Senators.  In that game Stefan Meyer (3), Drew Stafford (2), Marek Zagrapan (2), Dylan Hunter, Kamil Kreps, and Clarke MacArthur scored.

The Stars took an early control of the game chasing the Amerks all over the ice and creating numerous turnovers but by the end of the period the Amerks were up 2-0.  Kassian opened the scoring at 11:13 of the first period with a wrist shot from the top of the left face off circle past Texas Stores goalie Andrew Raycroft.  Maxime Leagult scored the second goal tipping in a Shaone Morrisonn shot from the blue line.

And then something similar happened in the second period, the Stars scored two goals and the thought of the 2nd period collapse back in December was on the minds of [...]Read More

Leggio Earns the Amerks 3 out of 4 Points Against the Heat

We’re now in the month of February and this is the time of the season that teams make a push for the playoffs and determine how they’ll be able to play once in the playoffs.  The NHL trade deadline is Monday February 27, 2012, just over three weeks away.  There’s one position that the Amerks have started to gain some consistency and that’s in goaltender David Leggio.  In two games he earned a shutout, overtime loss and combined 62 saves.  Leggio had an outstanding 33 save shutout on Thursday night and then two of the three goals scored against him on Friday night were the result of the puck being redirected, can’t really blame the goalie on those.  Now if only the Amerks could get healthy and possibly add a real scorer this team could start to make a better run.

The Amerks gained three out of four possible points in the standings so far this week which is acceptable looking at it that way.  The Amerks started the night three points behind the Marlies but the Marlies beat the Crunch and increased the lead to four.  Both teams have played 46 games.

In Thursdays game the Amerks looked like [...]Read More

Griffins 3 Goals in Under 3 Minutes Defeats Amerks; Gongalsky vs Piche

Griffins 3 Goals in Under 3 Minutes Defeats Amerks; Gongalsky vs Piche

The Amerks lost on Wednesday night and there’s two ways you could look at the standings after this game.  The glass half empty way is that the Amerks are following the Buffalo Sabres lead and slowly sinking in the standings.  There’s only four points that separates the Amerks from the Rockford IceHogs who are in last place in the conference.  They’re also only six points from last place in the league.  The glass half full way is that the Amerks are only two points from eighth place in the conference and four points from sixth place.  The good news is that the Amerks play nine out of 12 games in February on home ice so if there was ever a time to really turn things around it’d be in February.  The ship hasn’t sunk but there’s reason for concern.

The real downfall has been the inconsistencies.  Everything from goal scoring to goaltending to wins and losses.  This is a hard working group of hockey players with a lot of potential how much they can really accomplish is the question.  The hope for any sports team is to get into the playoffs and then anything can happen.  It’s going to take [...]Read More

Amerks Using a Mulligan after 5-2 Loss to the Barons, Try Again Friday

Amerks Using a Mulligan after 5-2 Loss to the Barons, Try Again Friday

The Rochester Americans weren’t very good on Thursday night and it showed on the scoreboard with the Oklahoma City Barons easily skating away with a 5-2 win.  The team will use a mulligan and forget the game ever happened and move on to the rematch on Friday night on the same ice surface.  I’ll continue going through a game recap but it can be summed up pretty easily, the Amerks were without three of their top defensemen and it showed.  The team was missing Shaone Morrisonn, Joe Finley and TJ Brennan and the Barons took advantage of it.

The news leading up to the game was that Michael Ryan would finally be back in the lineup after missing 35 games.  Well, he wasn’t.  He looked fine at the morning skate and Rolston even talked about him playing after practice.  Because of those two things I was expecting to see him but when the team came out for warmups one of the players missing was Ryan.  Jacob Legace wasn’t expected to play either but did given the opening in the roster.  Ryan in the lineup probably wouldn’t have been a game changer but he would’ve helped.

Alex Biega made one of the better [...]Read More

Top 11 Articles on Lets Go Amerks from 2011

It was a busy second half of 2011 for this site with acquiring a bigger audience with the sale of the Rochester Americans to the Buffalo Sabres.  Here’s a quick look back at what was popular over the past year (more like 6 months, I didn’t write much last season).

AHL Playoff Format for 2010-2011 Season ) - The most popular post was about the American Hockey League playoff format for the 2010/2011 season.  The information had spread pretty quickly which generated hits but it’s now old.  Here’s the format that changed completely for the 2011/2012 season, so here’s a link to that ( AHL Alignment and Playoff Format for 2011-2012 Season ).

Drew MacIntyre’s Lid Features Care Bears and Potato Heads ) – Everyone enjoys the story behind a goalies helmet and what it means to them, no surprise that MacIntyre’s has been a popular topic of conversation.  It’s a simple design with meaning behind it.

Big Joe Finley, Strong on Defense, Can Also Throw Lawn Mowers and Attack Mascots ) - Joe Finley has made quite the impression since being an invite to the Sabres training camp, earning an NHL contract and then getting his first call up.  Here’s a little back story on [...]Read More

Amerks Shootout Win Extends Streak to Four Games; Adversity is No Problem

Amerks Shootout Win Extends Streak to Four Games; Adversity is No Problem

(Update: Added shootout video and Travis Turnbull incident) This Rochester Americans team is supposed to lack goal scoring.  It’s supposed to be missing a couple of players as veteran leadership.  It’s supposed to lack depth.  It’s also supposed to be torn apart by all of the injuries and call ups but the players put everything out on the ice and won in a shootout against the top team in the league.  They were down 2-1 and 3-2 during the game but came back each time and didn’t slow down at all.  With the four game winning streak in hand the Amerks have climbed back to within one point of the North Division leading Toronto Marlies.  The players are certainly giving reasons to believe that the glass is half full and filling up.

Paul Szczechura, Shaone Morrisonn and Evan Rankin were all out of the lineup with injuries but watching the game it was hard to tell.  Sure, the team failed to score on five power play chances which is where a Szczechura or Rankin could have helped but when you can score at even strength it’s not as bad.

We’ve shared concerns about this [...]Read More

Grit, Guts and Goaltending Leads to Amerks 4-1 Win

Grit, Guts and Goaltending Leads to Amerks 4-1 Win

The story leading up to the Rochester Americans vs Lake Erie Monsters game on Wednesday night was that the Amerks were short on players with what seems like half the team up with the Buffalo Sabres.  On paper there wasn’t much hope for the game considering they’re a squad that at times has had problems scoring goals and they were about to face the American Hockey League’s best goaltender in Cedrick Desjardins.  No one should deny that the current Amerks roster has it’s challenges against other top teams in the league but one thing is certain, this team works hard and puts everything they have out on the ice and they proved that again with a 4-1 win over the Lake Erie Monsters.

“I give a lot of credit to our guys coming back from Texas and being able to bounce back at home and put the effort there,” said Head Coach Ron Rolston.  ”I think they did that tonight so we were very happy with that.” (from the Amerks press release)

Drew MacIntyre had a solid night in net for the Amerks and besides the one goal allowed he made a number of big time saves, including a glove [...]Read More

Amerks Need Some Players with 163 Man Games Lost Already

Amerks Need Some Players with 163 Man Games Lost Already

Here we are in late December and the offensive side of the Rochester Americans lineup has just about dried up and as of this morning the team is short on players heading into tonights game against the Lake Erie Monsters.  Based on the Amerks roster that played on Sunday minus Whitmore and Foligno they have six defensemen, two goalies and ten forwards.  The simple math indicates that leaves them two forwards short.  As of Tuesday night there was not any news of additions to the roster.

Don Stevens had mentioned on Sunday that Shaone Morrisonn and Joe Finley were out with injuries from that game.  Morrisonn was also handed a one game suspension from the American Hockey League for an elbow this past Friday against the San Antonio Rampage.  It’s possible that Morrisonn was just sitting the game out ahead of the pending suspension.  We should find out sometime today what the status is of Finley and Morrisonn.

There’s often talk about “man games lost” due to injuries on a team and I can’t imagine another team having a number as high as the Rochester Americans right now.  The number combined between injuries and call ups (based on my late [...]Read More

Persson to Play, Brennan out and the Amerks Are Always Looking for Players

Persson to Play, Brennan out and the Amerks Are Always Looking for Players

The Amerks are just finishing up their Thursday morning practice where they spent most of the time working on special teams.  Everyone was present and accounted for at practice with no current call ups.  Rolston said that he hadn’t talked to the Sabres yet but with the Sabres playing at home Friday night there’s no real urgency to scramble for flights.  If this had been last season in Portland someone would probably be getting a flight booked already as a precaution.

Along with the inuries and the call ups the other issue with the Rochester Americans roster is the lack of scoring at times.  When I asked Rolston if they’ve been looking at making changes to the roster by bringing in players he said, “pretty much every day it’s something we look at.”  He also said that every day they make sure to have a list of guys they’d like if the need comes up.  Finding the right players that will produce and have chemistry is the biggest issue.  Any moves would likely come from the ECHL where players may put up a ton of points there but that doesn’t always equal production in the AHL.  It’s probably a pipe [...]Read More

Amerks Injury Updates, MacIntyre is Back and The Positive Effect of Call Ups

Amerks Injury Updates, MacIntyre is Back and The Positive Effect of Call Ups

The big news out of Amerks practice this morning was that Drew MacIntyre was back on the ice with the team in net after spending some time with the Buffalo Sabres.  The first thought was maybe they just sent him down for the day but Ron Rolston confirmed that MacIntyre is here for the weekend.  So that brings up the next thought, are we going to see the return of the goalie rotation?  MacIntyre had two solid games before being called up and since then Leggio has played pretty good and carried the team.  There’s three games this weekend which means one of them will get two starts so we’ll find out tomorrow who that is.

Dennis Persson was on the ice this morning with a red no contact jersey practicing with the team.  He’s been out since the first week of the season with an ankle injury and looked to be skating well.  It’s not likely he’ll play this weekend but it’s a positive sign for a player that’s expected to be one of the top defensemen.

When I arrive at practice TJ Brennan was sitting on the bench without any upper pads on, it looked like he had [...]Read More

Amerks Late November Injury Report

Amerks Late November Injury Report

There’s one good thing going for the Amerks, they’ve been staying healthy and waiting to get guys back from injury instead of continuing to lose guys like the Buffalo Sabres.  The only long term injury at this point is Dennis Persson with no timetable set on his return.

It’s possible that Turnbull and Ryan could get clearance to play tonight against Hamilton but it’s doubtful.  Parker also sounds doubtful for tonight’s game as well.  More info below on everyone…

  • Travis Turnbull was hit in the head on November 11 (see it here) and did not return to the game after that.  He was expected back on Friday night against the Devils but must not have received clearance from the doctors.  The word concussion has never been used but I think it’s a safe assumption that’s what he’s been recovering from.
  • Michael Ryan has been skating and practicing with the team wearing a full cage and was expected back this weekend but the doctors have not yet cleared him.  At practice he has still been wearing a no contact jersey as well which is a sign he’s not ready.  He has been out with an “upper body” injury.  It was first [...]Read More
