Amerks vs Marlies Game 2 Video Highlights

There hasn’t been anything to say about the game two loss that hasn’t been said elsewhere.  If you watched the game you saw the same thing as everyone else. The Marlies were the better team for most of the game.  Rochester found a way to stay in the game like they have with just about all games all season but it wasn’t enough.

Video Highlights of Amerks 3-1 Win Over the Senators

The Amerks need every win they can get and continued to do that on Friday night with a 3-1 win over the Binghamton Senators to move into eighth place, at least for the time being.  Paul Szczechura, Luke Adam and Derek Whitmore are three players the Amerks need to rely on for scoring and they did just that scoring Friday night for the win.

There’s 16 regular season games left and every game and every point counts with only six points separating 3rd place and 11th place in the Western Conference.  The same two teams play again tonight and even though the Binghamton Senators are in last place they are not a team to be taken for granted.  As long as the Amerks play the same way they did on Friday night they should finish the weekend with four points.

Video Highlights from Amerks Shootout Win Over the Marlies

The Amerks won their second game in a row on Sunday against the Toronto Marlies in a home and home series.  The two games gave the Amerks a much needed four points in the standings and also proved again that they can compete with the best when they want to.  The videos below feature fights, hits and the goals scored.  Thanks to Kevin Wright / Disengage for capturing and uploading the videos!

The team will now prepare for back to back home games this Friday and Saturday against the Binghamton Senators, last seasons Calder Cup champions who are now in last place in the league.

T.J. Brennan and Ryan Hamilton throw down the mitts after a big hit by Brennan.

Travis Turnbull fights Marcel Mueller.

Derek Whitmore chases down his own dump in and lands a big check on Jesse Blacker. The TV broadcast does no justice to how loud the hit was in the arena.

Alex Biega banks a loose puck in the crease right into David Leggio’s ass and into the goal for the first goal of the game. This could be the Amerks’ blooper of the year.

Amerks Steal Shootout Win from the Marlies (with shootout video)

After a Friday night loss on the road against the Grand Rapids Griffins the Amerks completed the unexpected, two straight wins over the division leading Toronto Marlies.  They were able to hold on to a 2-1 lead on Saturday evening in Toronto and then battle back from a 2-0 deficit on Sunday night to eventually win in the shootout.

The Marlies went up 2-0 but never had complete control of the game where anyone should have thought that it was over.  Philippe Dupuis was given credit for the first Marlies goal even though credit should go to Alex Biega and Luke Adam.  Adam had tried to put the puck into the pads of Leggio for it to be covered up and when that didn’t work out Biega tried to clear it but it went into the net.  The second goal for the Marlies was scored by Nazem Kadri on a fast break down the ice after Paul Szczechura had been hit in the face with a high stick.  Neither of the ref’s saw the high stick and the Marlies scored on the break down the ice that followed.

TJ Brennan blasted home a shot with six seconds left in the [...]Read More

David Leggio Leads the Amerks to a Second Straight Win

David Leggio Leads the Amerks to a Second Straight Win

The Amerks are in need of a push to the playoffs and they gave themselves just that with their second win in a row on Friday night against the Adirondack Phantoms.  David Leggio played a superb game for his second shutout of the season with 27 saves.  There was also at least four or five additional saves given to the goal posts and crossbar.

The first period started getting physical with some extra shoves here and there following the whistles.  Jacob Lagace flattened Ben Holmstrom with a clean open ice hit.  Shortly after that Travis Turnbull and Ben Holmstrom shared a ‘friendly’ shoulder bump changing lines during a stoppage in play.  Matt Walker of the Phantoms also gave an extra shove on Luke Adam after a whistle.  Nothing else happened after those plays but both teams were proving they weren’t going to be pushed around.

Derek Whitmore scored the first goal and game winner at the 11 minute mark of the first period for his team leading 23rd goal of the season.  Joe Finley started the play with a long pass that bounced off of the stick of a Phantoms player and to Luke Adam.  Derek Whitmore was skating down the [...]Read More

Amerks Dim the Stars with a 9-4 Win

Amerks Dim the Stars with a 9-4 Win

It was only one game but it was an enjoyable game.  Out of 18 skaters on the ice only five ended the game without a point for the Rochester Americans, a pretty impressive accomplishment.  There were seven different players who scored goals and 11 different players tallied assists.  The last time the Amerks had a high scoring effort like that was December 16, 2006 when they had a 10-4 win over the Binghamton Senators.  In that game Stefan Meyer (3), Drew Stafford (2), Marek Zagrapan (2), Dylan Hunter, Kamil Kreps, and Clarke MacArthur scored.

The Stars took an early control of the game chasing the Amerks all over the ice and creating numerous turnovers but by the end of the period the Amerks were up 2-0.  Kassian opened the scoring at 11:13 of the first period with a wrist shot from the top of the left face off circle past Texas Stores goalie Andrew Raycroft.  Maxime Leagult scored the second goal tipping in a Shaone Morrisonn shot from the blue line.

And then something similar happened in the second period, the Stars scored two goals and the thought of the 2nd period collapse back in December was on the minds of [...]Read More

Leggio Earns the Amerks 3 out of 4 Points Against the Heat

We’re now in the month of February and this is the time of the season that teams make a push for the playoffs and determine how they’ll be able to play once in the playoffs.  The NHL trade deadline is Monday February 27, 2012, just over three weeks away.  There’s one position that the Amerks have started to gain some consistency and that’s in goaltender David Leggio.  In two games he earned a shutout, overtime loss and combined 62 saves.  Leggio had an outstanding 33 save shutout on Thursday night and then two of the three goals scored against him on Friday night were the result of the puck being redirected, can’t really blame the goalie on those.  Now if only the Amerks could get healthy and possibly add a real scorer this team could start to make a better run.

The Amerks gained three out of four possible points in the standings so far this week which is acceptable looking at it that way.  The Amerks started the night three points behind the Marlies but the Marlies beat the Crunch and increased the lead to four.  Both teams have played 46 games.

In Thursdays game the Amerks looked like [...]Read More

Griffins 3 Goals in Under 3 Minutes Defeats Amerks; Gongalsky vs Piche

Griffins 3 Goals in Under 3 Minutes Defeats Amerks; Gongalsky vs Piche

The Amerks lost on Wednesday night and there’s two ways you could look at the standings after this game.  The glass half empty way is that the Amerks are following the Buffalo Sabres lead and slowly sinking in the standings.  There’s only four points that separates the Amerks from the Rockford IceHogs who are in last place in the conference.  They’re also only six points from last place in the league.  The glass half full way is that the Amerks are only two points from eighth place in the conference and four points from sixth place.  The good news is that the Amerks play nine out of 12 games in February on home ice so if there was ever a time to really turn things around it’d be in February.  The ship hasn’t sunk but there’s reason for concern.

The real downfall has been the inconsistencies.  Everything from goal scoring to goaltending to wins and losses.  This is a hard working group of hockey players with a lot of potential how much they can really accomplish is the question.  The hope for any sports team is to get into the playoffs and then anything can happen.  It’s going to take [...]Read More

Amerks Using a Mulligan after 5-2 Loss to the Barons, Try Again Friday

Amerks Using a Mulligan after 5-2 Loss to the Barons, Try Again Friday

The Rochester Americans weren’t very good on Thursday night and it showed on the scoreboard with the Oklahoma City Barons easily skating away with a 5-2 win.  The team will use a mulligan and forget the game ever happened and move on to the rematch on Friday night on the same ice surface.  I’ll continue going through a game recap but it can be summed up pretty easily, the Amerks were without three of their top defensemen and it showed.  The team was missing Shaone Morrisonn, Joe Finley and TJ Brennan and the Barons took advantage of it.

The news leading up to the game was that Michael Ryan would finally be back in the lineup after missing 35 games.  Well, he wasn’t.  He looked fine at the morning skate and Rolston even talked about him playing after practice.  Because of those two things I was expecting to see him but when the team came out for warmups one of the players missing was Ryan.  Jacob Lagace wasn’t expected to play either but did given the opening in the roster.  Ryan in the lineup probably wouldn’t have been a game changer but he would’ve helped.

Alex Biega made one of the better [...]Read More

Top 11 Articles on Lets Go Amerks from 2011

It was a busy second half of 2011 for this site with acquiring a bigger audience with the sale of the Rochester Americans to the Buffalo Sabres.  Here’s a quick look back at what was popular over the past year (more like 6 months, I didn’t write much last season).

AHL Playoff Format for 2010-2011 Season ) - The most popular post was about the American Hockey League playoff format for the 2010/2011 season.  The information had spread pretty quickly which generated hits but it’s now old.  Here’s the format that changed completely for the 2011/2012 season, so here’s a link to that ( AHL Alignment and Playoff Format for 2011-2012 Season ).

Drew MacIntyre’s Lid Features Care Bears and Potato Heads ) – Everyone enjoys the story behind a goalies helmet and what it means to them, no surprise that MacIntyre’s has been a popular topic of conversation.  It’s a simple design with meaning behind it.

Big Joe Finley, Strong on Defense, Can Also Throw Lawn Mowers and Attack Mascots ) - Joe Finley has made quite the impression since being an invite to the Sabres training camp, earning an NHL contract and then getting his first call up.  Here’s a little back story on [...]Read More

Amerks Shootout Win Extends Streak to Four Games; Adversity is No Problem

Amerks Shootout Win Extends Streak to Four Games; Adversity is No Problem

(Update: Added shootout video and Travis Turnbull incident) This Rochester Americans team is supposed to lack goal scoring.  It’s supposed to be missing a couple of players as veteran leadership.  It’s supposed to lack depth.  It’s also supposed to be torn apart by all of the injuries and call ups but the players put everything out on the ice and won in a shootout against the top team in the league.  They were down 2-1 and 3-2 during the game but came back each time and didn’t slow down at all.  With the four game winning streak in hand the Amerks have climbed back to within one point of the North Division leading Toronto Marlies.  The players are certainly giving reasons to believe that the glass is half full and filling up.

(Picture by Steven Christy from http://okcbarons.com/)

Paul Szczechura, Shaone Morrisonn and Evan Rankin were all out of the lineup with injuries but watching the game it was hard to tell.  Sure, the team failed to score on five power play chances which is where a Szczechura or Rankin could have helped but when you can score at even strength it’s not as bad.

We’ve shared concerns about this [...]Read More
