Gameday: Amerks Can Move on With Win; Games 3 and 4 Highlights

April 23, 2010 - By Keith Wozniak

The Rochester Americans can move on to the second round for the first time since the 2004/2005 season with a win tonight against the Abbotsford Heat.  Considering the way the Amerks have played the last two games I think it’s safe to say that it’s probably, but overconfidence can be dangerous.

To borrow from the comment left by Dubblenikle yesterday, “They need to step on the throat of the Heat Friday.  They need to not let off the gas at all.  With the power play clicking they need to keep pressing with it.”

Couldn’t have said it better.  From the first second the puck hits the ice the Amerks need to go hard and not stop for 60 minutes so they can relax on the long flight home.

Tyler Plante needs to continue making big saves.  Mike York needs to continue setting up goals.  The defense needs to continue giving the offense confidence that they can help out.  Steve MacIntyre needs to continue to show his presence to the Heat.  Shawn Matthias needs to continue his AHL farewell tour (if he keeps this up he’ll be with the Panthers out of training camp).

The Amerks have shown confidence and consistency [...]Read More

Saturday Night Fight Videos with Roy and Matthias

April 18, 2010 - By Keith Wozniak

The game on Saturday night between the Amerks and Heat was hard hitting and filled with a lot of punches, pushing and shoving.  Tyler Plante set the tone early keeping his crease safe and clearing it out when the Heat got too close.

Mathieu Roy got into the first fight of the night against Matt Pelech at 4:14 of the first period.  Just prior to the fight, as you’ll see in the video, Pelech gave Shawn Matthias a big hit at the blue line.  Right after the hit Roy challenged Pelech and this is the outcome.

There were a lot of other scraps in the game but the only other complete fight was between Shawn Matthias and Carter Bancks.  We’ve seen Matthias score goals and throw some decent hits but a fight was completely unexpected.

I asked Matthias about the fight after the game and Matthias said, “He really wanted to fight. I’ve never been asked to fight before so I kind of jumped on the opportunity and had fun with it.”

I then asked him about having a fight card at HockeyFights.com and he laughed and said, “I don’t know if my mom will like [...]Read More

Steve MacIntyre Takes on Wade Belak

March 30, 2010 - By Keith Wozniak

Steve MacIntyre was called up this past Friday to the Florida Panthers when David Booth was injured the night before.  During the Panthers vs Predators game on Monday night he took on Wade Belak for an NHL heavyweight fight.  Not a bad fight at all.  Here’s hoping he’s back in time for the final game of the regular season against the Syracuse Crunch.

Hudson and Henry Fight Videos vs Marlies

March 29, 2010 - By Keith Wozniak

In his first professional game Carl Hudson dropped the gloves with Andre Deveaux of the Toronto Marlies.  Hudson had just skated by Jesse Blacker of the Marlies and looked like he had just barely hit him but it also looked at the time like there was an elbow involved.  Immediately after Deveaux went after Hudson which gave him an extra instigator penalty and a 10 minute misconduct.

If you have to call a winner it clearly goes to Deveaux but Hudson deserves credit for the big hit.  The extra penalty given to Deveaux resulted in an Amerks power play and a goal by Jeff Taffe to give the Amerks a 3-1 lead at the time.

Towards the end of the second period Jordan Henry and Phil Oreskovic must have decided they had enough chirping when they agreed to fight after a face off.  You can watch what leads up to the fight or skip to about the :55 second mark to see the fight itself.

Friday Night Fights Featuring MacIntyre and Bonneau

March 13, 2010 - By Keith Wozniak

The game on Friday night between the Rochester Americans and Albany River Rats took less than 12 minutes before the two teams proved they were not going to be pushed around by the other.  Steve MacIntyre set the pace early with a huge hit on Casey Borer behind the Rats net and from then on it was a physical first period.  That type of hit is what fans would love to see more of.  A big hard clean hit.

Steve MacIntyre vs Zack FitzGerald at 11:17 of the first period:

The Amerks are on the road on Saturday night against the Syracuse Crunch, a team they’ve beaten eight times already this season.  The Crunch will be looking for redemption on home ice and I’m sure Mirasty will be looking for a rematch against MacIntyre.  Unfortunately I will not be at the game, hopefully someone else will to get some video!

Jimmy Bonneau vs Garrett Klotz Fight Video

January 31, 2010 - By Keith Wozniak

It comes as no surprise that Jimmy Bonneau returns to the lineup and he’s in a fight in front of the home crowd.  After Jordan Henry scored to put the Amerks up 1-0 these two dropped their gloves after the face off.  Klotz appeared to be ready for the fight but once they locked up he did not want to let go.

The major penalty was the 21st of the season for Bonneau which puts him two behind Louis Robitaille and he is still two ahead of Jon Mirasty.  It’s hard to imagine at one point Bonneau was released from the team before being brought back.  Not only does Bonneau provide some muscle on the ice he’s constantly talking things up when he’s on the bench as well.  A solid played that we can only hope is brought back again next season.

Steve MacIntyre vs Grant McNeill Fight Video

December 18, 2009 - By Keith Wozniak

Steve MacIntyre vs Crunch 11-20-2009Steve MacIntyre dropped the gloves with Grant McNeill of the Hershey Bears on Friday night and the footage is below.  MacIntyre gets the obvious decision with a couple of good punches.  The winning fight for MacIntyre appeared to spark something in the team since they were able to score a goal a few minutes later.  It turned out to be the only goal of the game.

MacIntyre did not return after the fight because he was not feeling well.

12/12 Jimmy Bonneau vs Grant McNeil Fight Video

December 13, 2009 - By Keith Wozniak

Jimmy Bonneau has been a consistent enforcer for the Amerks this season and with the team already trailing 4-0 he dropped the gloves to square off with Grant McNeil.  A decent fight even after the jersey went over his head he continued to connect with punches.  Bonneau has not only been a consistent enforcer but also a consistent player that Benoit Groulx can rely on for a regular shift without being a liability on the ice.

Unfortunately Steve MacIntyre appeared to back down from two different requests to fight during the game, at least that’s how a couple of fans viewed things from the game.  I don’t have any names of Bears players that challenged him, but I also have no reason to doubt those who told me this.  The only reason I mention that is because it’s becoming a common occurrence for MacIntyre.  He has gone from an anticipated heavyweight bringing some action to a complete snooze.

The Amerks welcome the Syracuse Crunch back to Rochester on Tuesday night.  The Amerks are 6-0 against the Crunch this season and it’s a losing streak I know the Crunch would like to end, especially [...]Read More
