Amerks vs Bears Goal Scoring Video Highlights

In one of their better games of the season the Amerks defeated the Hershey Bears on Wednesday night by the final score of 5-2.  You can read my quick recap of the game here or watch the video highlights below of the Amerks goals scored.

It was a big win against the Hershey Bears who’ve consistently been one of the best teams in the league.  The one area they lack in is on defense and the Amerks took full advantage of it.

How will they play out the weekend?  We find out tonight against the Phantoms and on Saturday against the Monsters.

Derek Whitmore scores the first goal of night which sent the teddy bears flying to the ice.

Corey Tropp from Colin Stuart.

Dennis Persson scores a beautiful goal.

Marcus Foligno all alone slips it past Holtby.

Corey Tropp scores his second of the night in similar fashion to the first.

Griffins 3 Goals in Under 3 Minutes Defeats Amerks; Gongalsky vs Piche

Griffins 3 Goals in Under 3 Minutes Defeats Amerks; Gongalsky vs Piche

The Amerks lost on Wednesday night and there’s two ways you could look at the standings after this game.  The glass half empty way is that the Amerks are following the Buffalo Sabres lead and slowly sinking in the standings.  There’s only four points that separates the Amerks from the Rockford IceHogs who are in last place in the conference.  They’re also only six points from last place in the league.  The glass half full way is that the Amerks are only two points from eighth place in the conference and four points from sixth place.  The good news is that the Amerks play nine out of 12 games in February on home ice so if there was ever a time to really turn things around it’d be in February.  The ship hasn’t sunk but there’s reason for concern.

The real downfall has been the inconsistencies.  Everything from goal scoring to goaltending to wins and losses.  This is a hard working group of hockey players with a lot of potential how much they can really accomplish is the question.  The hope for any sports team is to get into the playoffs and then anything can happen.  It’s going to take [...]Read More

Shaone Morrisonn Suspended 3 Games for this Hit

Shaone Morrisonn Suspended 3 Games for this Hit

The American Hockey League suspended Shaone Morrisonn for three games for this hit on January 14th to the head of Brian Willsie of the Hamilton Bulldogs.  This is the second suspension of the season for Morrisonn which puts him on the repeat offender list.  He was also suspended for one game for a hit during the  Amerks vs Rampage game back on December 16th.

Watching the video even though Willsie had his head down I suspect Morrisonn was suspended because he didn’t keep his arm tucked into his body and in the end he did hit him in the head, something that is against the rules.

The Amerks have had extra defensemen for most of the season but heading into the game on Thursday they’ll only have five (as of writing this).  Alex Biega, Dennis Persson, Drew Schiestel, Nick Crawford and Corey Fienhage.  The other defensemen, TJ Brennan and Joe Finley are on recall to the Buffalo Sabres.  Unless one of those guys is sent down the team will need to go hunting for someone in the ECHL to fill in the gap.

What’d you think?

Joe Finley vs Kyle Neuber Fight Video

This past Friday night the Toronto Marlies defeated the Rochester Americans in overtime by the final score of 2-1 and in the second period Joe Finley and Kyle Neuber dropped the mitts in the fight below.  After the game Finley was called up to the Buffalo Sabres to fill in for an injured Brayden McNabb and he went on to fight Matt Martin of the New York Islanders.

I apologize about the black and white like quality of the video but it’s the best I could get from the AHL Live site.

Amerks Comeback Takes the Bears to the Shootout; Successful Weekend

Amerks Comeback Takes the Bears to the Shootout; Successful Weekend

The Amerks loss to the Hershey Bears can be looked at a few ways but the best way to look at it is that this team has a lot of heart, character and a never say die attitude that’s awesome to watch.  After two periods the Bears were winning the game and had a 36-9 advantage in shots, they had a 15-3 advantage after the first period.  The game appeared to be a game of kids amongst men but it was still only 2-0 after 40 minutes with plenty of time for the Amerks to make it a game.  They did just that 15 seconds into the third period and then tied it up with 61 seconds left on the scoreboard to send the game into overtime and the eventual shootout.

It was a successful weekend for the Amerks picking up four out of a possible six points in the standings.  They lost in the shootout on Friday against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and defeated the Binghamton Senators on Saturday.  I’ve often said not so nice things about the quality of video that you get [...]Read More

Taylor Chorney Hit on Amerks Evan Rankin

Taylor Chorney Hit on Amerks Evan Rankin

During the December 27th game between the Rochester Americans and Oklahoma City Barons the hit in the video below took Evan Rankin out of the game and he did not return.  He had to be helped to the ice by the trainer and missed the game the next night on December 28th.  I may be biased but it sure looks like Chomey skates at him and raises his shoulder as he goes in for the hit.  There was no penalty called on the play.

Rankin has been the a key player on the ice for the Amerks since joining them on November 25th when he was signed to a professional tryout.  In 13 games with the team he has seven goals and five assists which includes two games with two goals.  The 25 game PTO will run out at the end of January and assuming he’s not out for long it should be a guarantee he’ll land an AHL contract to stay here the rest of the season.  The only other player with seven goals in that same time frame is Derek Whitmore.

Amerks Shootout Win Extends Streak to Four Games; Adversity is No Problem

Amerks Shootout Win Extends Streak to Four Games; Adversity is No Problem

(Update: Added shootout video and Travis Turnbull incident) This Rochester Americans team is supposed to lack goal scoring.  It’s supposed to be missing a couple of players as veteran leadership.  It’s supposed to lack depth.  It’s also supposed to be torn apart by all of the injuries and call ups but the players put everything out on the ice and won in a shootout against the top team in the league.  They were down 2-1 and 3-2 during the game but came back each time and didn’t slow down at all.  With the four game winning streak in hand the Amerks have climbed back to within one point of the North Division leading Toronto Marlies.  The players are certainly giving reasons to believe that the glass is half full and filling up.

Paul Szczechura, Shaone Morrisonn and Evan Rankin were all out of the lineup with injuries but watching the game it was hard to tell.  Sure, the team failed to score on five power play chances which is where a Szczechura or Rankin could have helped but when you can score at even strength it’s not as bad.

We’ve shared concerns about this [...]Read More

Video of Conboy’s Hit on Turnbull and Fight vs Finley

Video of Conboy’s Hit on Turnbull and Fight vs Finley

Late in the second period Tim Conboy of the Binghamton Senators dropped Travis Turnbull of the Rochester Americans with a hit to the head that sent Turnbull to the ice and out of the game.  Moments after the hit Joe Finley challenged Conboy and the two shared a couple of punches.  Not sure why Finley took off skating backwards instead of just going at it where they were.

Turnbull slowly went off the ice and the game was over for him at that point.  He went flying down to the ice, his helmet went in the air and his gloves were knocked off.

Earlier in the game towards the end of the first period they each received unsportsmanlike penalties for something but I didn’t see what happend.  Did anyone see it?  They didn’t appear to get along and Conboy got the hit in late in the game.

Conboy and Finley each received a five minute penalty for fighting and Conboy received a 10 minute match penalty for a “check to the head.”  Here’s what the AHL rule book says about the call:

48.5 Match Penalty – The Referee, at his discretion, may assess a match penalty if, in his judgment, [...]Read More

Video Highlights from the Amerks 6-5 OT Win Against the Crunch

The Amerks winner in overtime was an interesting game.  There was 11 goals scored.  Penalties.  Breakaway goals.  Defensive breakdowns.  Great passing and even some questionable goaltending.  By the time the game was over the Amerks had the win and two additional points in the standings.

There are some highlight reel goals in here from Mark Voakes looking like a wide receiver at center ice, Zack Kassians fancy stickwork on his fifth goal of the season and a superb shot by Brayden McNabb in overtime to secure the win.

You can see the Syracuse Crunch goals as well and see some defensive breakdowns by the Amerks and a soft goal by David Leggio.

As always, I apologize about the blurry scoreboard video highlights but they’re better than nothing at all.  Share and enjoy!

B-Sens Highlights from Last Saturday’s Win Over the Amerks

If few saw it, does it really count?  Well, it does now with these highlights of the Binghamton Senators defeating the Rochester Americans.  The Amerks lost their fifth straight game last Saturday night in Binghamton.  I just noticed I never wrote a postgame report, here’s a little something with video highlights courtesy of the B-Sens.  The Amerks came out flat and paid the price.  Binghamton is missing players just as much as the Amerks so the only excuse was that Binghamton had more talent.

There’s one common trend of goals scored against the Amerks, the opposition is splitting the defense or getting fast breaks.  That brings up the question, who’s doing what wrong?  Lack of communication?  Skill?  Goaltending not making big saves?  Time will tell.

Here’s the Amerks press release with a recap:

The lone Rochester goal in the loss was scored by Corey Tropp, with assists going to Phil Varone and Brayden McNabb. Netminder Drew MacIntyre was strong in goal for the Amerks, finishing with 27 saves between the pipes.

The Senators were led offensively by Pat Cannone, Jim O’Brien and Mike Hoffman, each of whom contributed a goal apiece. Veteran goaltender Mike McKenna turned away 33 of 34 [...]Read More

Team Effort by Amerks Leads to Shootout Win (Video included)

What we have here folks is a nice three game winning streak!  The Amerks played 60 minutes of hockey where we saw them come back from a two goal deficit to defeat the Syracuse Crunch 3-2 in a shootout on Tuesday night.  Jacob Lagace scored the first goals for the Amerks followed by the tying goal at 15:02 of the third period on the power play by Nick Crawford.  Derek Whitmore and Jonathan Parker scored in the shootout to secure the win with David Leggio playing a key role in net for the team.

The Amerks have tomorrow off before geting back to practice on Thursday ahead of three games in three nights this weekend.

The game started out rough with the Syracuse Crunch going up 2-0 within the first six minutes of the game after costly turnovers by Corey Tropp and Travis Turnbull on the first goal and TJ Brennan on the second.

Kyle Palmieri scored the first goal of the game after the turnover by sniping the puck into the top corner after he faked out Leggio making it look like he was about to pass the puck.

“First one was a terrible goal.  Bad goal, short side, [...]Read More

Zack Kassian and Marcus Foligno Fight Video

Zack Kassian and Marcus Foligno Fight Video

During the third period of the Amerks 7-2 win over the Grand Rapids Griffins this fight broke out on the ice.  Foligno was being given a boarding penalty for a hit just before this fight broke out. Marcus Foligno vs Travis Ehrhardt on one side, Zack Kassian vs Garnet Exelby on the other.  Late at getting the camera up and recording and trying to fit both in at once.

Not bad for these two rookies!  They can skate, pass, score goals and dropped the gloves.

That picture of Kassian, is he going for the Beetlejuice or Ogie Oglethorpe look for Halloween?
