Another One Goal Loss, Pens Defeat Amerks in the Shootout

The Amerks picked up a point again on the road against a tough Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins team which is better than nothing.  It came down to the skills competition where Eric Tangradi scored in the eighth round scoring top corner glove side on Drew MacIntyre for the win.  These one goal losses and one point games could come back to haunt the Amerks in April.  A week ago they were only one point back of the first place Marlies and after tonight their seven back from first in the division but tied for eighth in the conference.

The game started with both teams skating back and forth for the first 10:48 before the first whistle of the game and then they finished the first period in under a half hour.  At 17:11 of the first period Marcus Foligno put the puck on goaltender Brad Thiessen who tried to go for the glove side but it went off the edge of his glove.  The puck landed to the side of the net where Phil Varone was skating in and scored for his third of the season.

Jason Williams tied the game at 11:07 of the second period with a shot from the [...]Read More

Gameday: Maturing Amerks Hit the Road Again; Morrisonn and Tropp Return

The Amerks hit the road again for the start of a busy almost second half of the season.  They’ll be playing three games in three nights starting tonight against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and then Binghamton Senators and then closing out the weekend against the Hershey Bears on Sunday.  The team will play every Friday and Saturday night until April 6th which is the second to last weekend of the season.  This will also be one of five sets of three games in three nights to finish the season.

Last weekend the Amerks ended the year one point behind the Toronto Marlies for first place in the division and here we are a week later and the Amerks are now six points behind them and ninth place in the conference.  It’s not October or November anymore, this is the time of season when points start to have a lot more meaning when it comes to the playoffs.  There are 43 games remaining and there’s only four points separating the Amerks from where they are in ninth place to the Hamilton Bulldogs in 13th.

The Rochester Americans have been maturing as the season goes on which is great instead of a quick [...]Read More

Other Blogs Covering AHL Teams

Without anything Rochester Americans related to write about this morning I thought I’d take a minute to share some links to other blogs out in cyberspace covering AHL teams, much like I cover the Amerks here.

We’re all unique in how we cover our teams but all hold one thing in common, being passionate about the teams that we cheer on.  There are independent sites, not associated with any major news papers / media outlets.  I’ll work on a separate list of blogs written by those places.

Here’s what I have in my reading list, if there’s others out there please share!

(in no particular order – if anyone feels like copying and pasting this list for their site go right ahead, just don’t forget to add mine!)

Amerks Home Opener had Some Awesome and Some Booing

Amerks Home Opener had Some Awesome and Some Booing

The game that was played for 60 minutes on the ice pretty much speaks for itself.  The team was outplayed by a more skilled Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins team.  Going into further detail really won’t accomplish much and does anyone really want to discuss it further?  It’s only two games into the season, there’s absolutely no reason to hit a panic button but there’s reason for concern.  Time to get into the good things before the negative..

The Rochester Americans home opener overall though had a great atmosphere to it.  There were fans in the building early for the current Amerks players to walk the red carpet and then for the alumni to arrive.  Many of the alumni were seen hanging out throughout the game and intermissions with fans chatting.

The Moose and Sabretooth were hanging out signing autographs and taking pictures together.

The new video scoreboard that had a cost of over 200k was impressive (even if it didn’t show any shots on goal).  The video quality was improved and just added to the overall atmosphere.

It was also great running into people that you only see during hockey season and catching up on life.

The home opener had that special [...]Read More

Weekend Recap: Two Losses, A Goalie Scored and Steiner Sent to Reading

March 22, 2010 - By

The Amerks lost two games on the road this weekend and sent Daniel Steiner back to Reading.  That’s the weekend in one sentence.  I took the weekend off from watching Amerks hockey and apparently I did not miss all that much but felt the need to write a recap of the weekend.

** Daniel Steiner has been sent back (technically loaned) to the Reading Royals of the ECHL.  Steiner had spent the first part of the season with the Royals after he was not able to land a job in the NHL or AHL.  He is signed to a contract with the Amerks which is why he was technically loaned.  Steiner is considered a veteran and with the other veterans healthy he was the odd man out.  It’s better for him to get playing time than sitting out every game here.  (Prev article: Steiner is Living the Dream)

** The Amerks lost 4-2 on Friday against the Binghamton Senators.  If you look at the final stat sheet you’ll see that B-Sens goalie Chris Holt scored an empty net power play goal.  Yes, a goalie scored against the Amerks.  The Senators had a three goal lead until Graham Mink [...]Read More

Gameday: Amerks @ WB/S Penguins at 7:05pm 1/2/10

January 2, 2010 - By

The Amerks are back in action tonight on the road against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins at 7:05pm and looking to end a two game losing streak.

Rochester is coming off of a 5-1 loss to the Lake Erie Monsters on New Years Eve and a 4-1 loss the night before against the Hamilton Bulldogs. The Amerks are 5-9-1 since they last played the Pens on November 27th winning that game 4-3. The Amerks had a 4-0 lead after two periods and sat back as the Pens scored three third period goals to make it close. After the game the Amerks were 18-2-1 and getting ready for the long road trip.

It’s easy to look back at the game and notice things changed. After that game the players talked about taking it easy the second half of that game as they looked towards the long trip. A lot has happened since that game I think mentally as well as injuries and call ups. The team has also had very few practices that has hurt chemistry and the ability to try and reconnect.

The Penguins are coming off of a 3-2 loss on Friday night but as Pens beat [...]Read More

Bonneau and Duco Fight Videos vs Penguins

November 28, 2009 - By

Jimmy Bonneau vs WBS PenguinsAfter Clay Wilson scored in the first period to give the Amerks a commanding (at the time) 3-0 lead over the Penguins it was only a matter of time before we saw a fight.  The Penguins were going to be looking for a way to change the momentum of the game and sometimes a fight can help make that happen.

It only took three seconds after that Wilson goal for Jimmy Bonneau and Aaron Boogard to drop the gloves.

At 6:17 of the second period with the Amerks still leading 4-0 we saw Mike Duco go at it with Tim Wallace.

Neither fight changed the momentum for either team.  The Penguins were clearly the team trying harder in the 2nd and 3rd periods but the fight had nothing to do with that, it was more like an Amerks team on cruise control.

Amerks Coast to a 4-3 Win Over the Baby Pens

November 27, 2009 - By

The Amerks had a repeat performance Friday night of a game against Syracuse, they played to not lose instead of playing to win.

“It was a good first and we coasted after that,” Benoit Groulx said in his short 45 second press conference.

Its easy to tell when Groulx is not happy versus when he is to put it bluntly pissed off.

The thoughts of the players in the locker room was that they know they coasted. They held back. They were saving themselves thinking of the stretch ahead.

A dangerous mindset to have but luckily they have Alexander Salak in net to keep them in the game.

But hey, they won the game. They picked up two more points. This was their fourth win in a row. The team also has not lost in regulation this season when scoring first.

It was also the biggest crowd in the Styres era even if the numbers appear off (meaning it seemed like a lot more).

And did you see the play Andrew Sweetland made to setup Jordan Henrys game winning goal? Awesome!

Sorry about the short post game writeup, decided to head out after the game instead [...]Read More

Mike Sgroi is Passionate about Hockey and Fighting

September 27, 2009 - By

When the name Mike Sgroi is brought up in the world of hockey fighters you’ll get responses ranging from a great heavyweight fighter that can skate to someone who is a lunatic, a cancer in the locker room, and a whack job with a highly inflated ego.

Some of things may have been true years ago but not so anymore.

Sgroi is out to prove everyone wrong and earn a roster spot on a team that’s in need of a heavyweight fighter.  The Amerks aren’t in need of just a heavyweight, but a heavyweight that can also play hockey.  Playing hockey is the focus of the Amerks training camp and something Sgroi did a decent job of on the opening day of camp.

Amerks head coach Benoit Groulx wants more than just a heavyweight, “We want a guy that can not only be an enforcer on the ice but a guy that can bring toughness and a guy that can skate.”

Mike understands what the team is looking for and said, “That’s the one thing that separates me a little bit.  I’ve always liked to play.  I’ve always been a half decent hockey player as well as a fighter.  [...]Read More

Tough Guy Mike Sgroi Invited to Amerks Camp

September 11, 2009 - By

The calls for an enforcer for the upcoming season could be answered, tough guy Mike Sgroi has been invited to the Amerks training camp on a tryout contract.  Thanks to Lyndsay Kramer (covers the Syracuse Crunch) for reporting the info.

Apparently Ted Nolan has shown interest in Sgroi and called to invite him to camp.  In Kramers blog he quoted Sgroi talking about Nolan saying, “He’s done his homework,” Sgroi said. “He’s called everyone I’ve known or played with.”

Sgroi has made the rounds over the past decade playing for 20 different teams, the Amerks will be team number 21.  In the American Hockey League Sgroi has played for the Syracuse Crunch, Binghamton Senators, Chicago Wolves, Rockford IceHogs, Albany River Rats, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, and the Norfolk Admirals.

Doing some research on Sgroi the few reasons I can find for him bouncing around so much is due to injuries and some of his “side show” antics with his fights.  I’m not really sure what that means, but if he can stay healthy and play smart he sounds like a great player fans would love to see every night.

One thing that separates him from other enforcers is that he’s also [...]Read More

Amerks Jersey Ranked 2nd by The Hockey News

August 13, 2009 - By

The Hockey News ranked jerseys last year based on the teams logo, this year they decided to go by patches, striping, and piping to rank the jerseys.  I also need to mention colors as well.

The Amerks were ranked second for a “Classic crest with a clean look to it.”  I’m not quite sure how the Milwaukee Admirals got the top spot.  In a typically boring month for hockey news this is what we get.

Take the time to visit The Hockey News web site to vote for the Rochester Americans jersey as the best in the AHL – http://thehockeynews.com/pages/puck_poll.php

Two teams missing are the Texas Stars and Abbotsford Heat because the teams have not officially launched their jerseys.  To view what was actually said about each jersey click here – http://www.thehockeynews.com/articles/27493-.html.

Here’s the straight rankings:

1. Milwaukee Admirals
2. Rochester Americans
3. San Antonio Rampage
4. Springfield Falcons
5. Manchester Monarchs
6. Worcester Sharks
7. Norfolk Admirals
8. Bridgeport Sound Tigers
9. Peoria Rivermen
10. Chicago Wolves
11. Manitoba Moose
12. Houston Aeros
13. Hershey Bears
14. Toronto Marlies
