Leggio Leads the Amerks to the Second Half of the Season with a Win

Another weekend has come and gone and another pair of solid performances by the Rochester Americans.  The team finished the set of games with three out of a possible four points with an overtime loss to the Toronto Marlies on Friday and regulation win against the Hamilton Bulldogs on Saturday night.  David Leggio has stepped up to becoming the star of the team right now with his fourth straight standout performance.  Leggio had 35 saves in a win against the Bulldogs on Saturday and over the course of the past four starts he has made 165 saves in net.  That’s a lot of pucks to be stopping.  Oh defense where are you?

This team has needed the goalie to steal wins and the win against Hamilton could be considered one of those games.  Right now that goal is David Leggio and he’ll have more starts on the horizon.

Back to the win over Hamilton.. the Amerks are now 9-0-1-0 when leading after two periods of play.  When this team can find a way to build a lead they’ve done an outstanding job of holding on to it.

Joe Finley vs Zack Fitzgerald Fight Video

Halfway through the Rochester Americans 5-3 win over the Hamilton Bulldogs on Saturday night we saw this short fight below between Joe Finley and Zack Fitzgerald of the Hamilton Bulldogs.  Fitzgerald partially hit Marcus Foligno with a hip check near center ice and Finley immediately stepped in to drop the gloves with Fitzgerald.  If Finley hadn’t been there we likely would’ve seen Foligno drop the gloves as he looked for an altercation when he got up.

It was a short fight with Fitzgerald getting a nice shot in on Finley.  As each game passes Finley is working closer and closer to deserving an NHL contract if there’s more injuries with the Buffalo Sabres defense.

Zack Fitzgerald was also involved in this fight below during the 2009/2010 season when he played for the Albany River Rats and squared off against Steve MacIntyre in an Amerks uniform.

Postgame: Bulldogs Shootout Win Ends Amerks Winning Streak

The Amerks 3-2 shootout loss to the Bulldogs on Friday night felt like a tennis match at times, back and forth, back and forth, back and forth.  It was much better than the first game of the season though when the Amerks lost 5-2.  One of the big differences in this game was the Amerks being down two top forwards due to suspensions, Marcus Foligno and Jonathan Parker.

Zack Fitzgerald got a lucky deflection to put the Bulldogs ahead 1-0 at 15:32 of the second period.  He had a clear opening and took the shot on Drew MacIntyre and as he did that Travis Turnbull reached with his stick and ended up deflecting the puck past MacIntyre.

Corey Tropp tied the game up 1-1 at 10:49 of the second when he took the puck down into the Hamilton zone along the boards, went around defender Zack Fitzgerald towards the bottom of the face off circle and then beat Nathan Lawson high on the opposite side of where he skated in from.  It was his first goal of the season.

Friday Night Fights Featuring MacIntyre and Bonneau

The game on Friday night between the Rochester Americans and Albany River Rats took less than 12 minutes before the two teams proved they were not going to be pushed around by the other.  Steve MacIntyre set the pace early with a huge hit on Casey Borer behind the Rats net and from then on it was a physical first period.  That type of hit is what fans would love to see more of.  A big hard clean hit.

The Amerks are on the road on Saturday night against the Syracuse Crunch, a team they’ve beaten eight times already this season.  The Crunch will be looking for redemption on home ice and I’m sure Mirasty will be looking for a rematch against MacIntyre.  Unfortunately I will not be at the game, hopefully someone else will to get some video!
